Skype 8.13.0.2

Post by Bob M »

I just stupidly allowed Skype to update to version 8.13.0.2 and now there is no Webcam to be found by Skype.

The Webcam is connected and working fine using QTCam on Linux Mint, but Skype can no longer see it.

It was fine prior to update.

Any suggestions anyone?

Me, too, Bob. Exactly the same. But it was the Mint update and, so, I trusted it. My webcam is a Logitech C920. The audio picks up from the Webcam so it is registering there.

I went back to the Skype website but I can't see any way of downloading my previous 8.11.nn version which DID work.

If I get any joy anywhere, I'll post again.

Nic

Thanks Nic I'll do the same.

Same as you, I trusted it as it came through as a Mint update but I won't do that again.

My Webcam/Microphone combination is iLuv for what it's worth.

As a matter of interest I have skypeforlinux 64.deb dated Nov 2017 in my Downloads folder which I'm happy to upload to Dropbox or somewhere if that helps.

And just for a laugh my wife who runs Win 10 on her Laptop has just updated Skype and it has totally screwed her machine including adding dozens of contacts she has never heard of.

Of course not, Skype is now owned by Microsoft!

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the offer of a link to skypeforlinux 64.deb dated Nov 2017. Did you try uninstalling 8.13.02 and reinstalling skypeforlinux 64.deb dated Nov 2017? Or does it not let you reinstall the old version?

The 8.11.nn version I downloaded just before Christmas (because I was trying to contact family in the States) worked a treat then, no problems. Did the November 2017 work O.K.?

Still waiting for Skype Feedback who 'appreciate me taking time to send them my feedback' and want me to send them more feedback. Ho hum!

I also made the mistake of installing the new version from Synaptic.
Camera is okay it works on Cheese. Microphone on Camera Logitech c615 works as well, yet no video.

I tried to force the installation of the previous version of Skype, however Synaptic always re-installs
Skype 8.13.0.2.
Can someone take Skype 8.13.0.2 off from Synaptic and insert the previous version?

I managed to recover the situation by rolling back to my last Restore Point using "Systemback" and am now running ver. 8.11.0.4 again.

Seems one can't even run Linux without Microsoft stuffing something.

And just a heads up the Mint updater still wants to reinstall the latest version, so untick that for goodness sake.

Reason: using "Systemback" was a smart move . .

Skype in Linux was a dog before MS owned it, nothing's changed really.

This answer from Skype support is likely not correct. Linux Mint 17.x is based on Ubuntu 14.04, hence Skype should properly working. Moreover, it seams that also Ubuntu users have similar problems (reading some forum in internet). The update is just broken.

Anyway you all are luky guys... In my computer (Linux Mint 17.2), Skype is just a blank window... Not just the webcam... In any case I always have audio problems with this new app (audio is disturbed and after some time syncronisation audio-video is lost).

Same here. Linux Mint 17.3 and blank window of new Skype.
I uninstalled 8.13.0.2, manually downloaded deb package, and installed 8.11.0.4 from Skype repo - https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/
8.11.0.4 works fine for me.

Hi all,

Hello Eric,

Sorry to hear that. May I ask what is your OS distro?

As a workaround, can you try installing the 8.11.0.4 version?

Kind regards,

JonasT

I downloaded the 8.11.04.deb version he offered and - YES - it seems to load o.k. and I do have video!! I've tried one Skype call and that went fine :)

Strangely, if I call someone and they are not in/don't pick up then Skype seems to exit and I have to restart to try another call. Why, I don't know!

But, anyway, many thanks to Bob M and all of you on this Forum. Just keep avoiding Skype's advice to upgrade to the latest version!! :D

Nic

Thanks for the hint. I used the "force version" in Synaptic to force the use of 8.11.0.4 and it is working (that is, only the usual problems...) now.

Right, the new version doesn't work at all. I downloaded & installed Skype version 8.11.0.4 (skypeforlinux-64.deb) which works. As soon as Update Manager offered to install the update, I put Skype on ignore.

It seems there is a new version of Skype (that is 8.14.76.4), but in Synaptic it is still marked as "unstable".

Hi,
I too am trying to get Skype to work properly. I'm running Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya. I downloaded Skype version 18.13.02 for LinuxDeb from the Skype website. It loads, but I can't get any audio output to work. I double checked all my system volume setting and that my headset is the source for both input and output. Any suggestions how how to fix this?

Well according to Microsoft they don't support Mint anymore.

See Link in post #4

For what it's worth I managed to get the earlier version of Skype (Ver. 8.11.0.4) to work after re-installation and considerable trouble. :(

Thanks Bob. Is this where you downloaded the prior version that you were able to get working: https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/

Actually Sue I found the old download in my Download Folder amongst all sorts of things.

However, if you can find Ver 8.11.0.4 in that link you provided you should be in business.

One other thing is it will want to update, so don't let it, or you'll be back to square one.

Good Luck

In the forums you will find a link see;-
viewtopic.php?f=49&t=261481&p=1413497&h ... o#p1413497

The link to prior versions is;-

https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/

Here you will find Skype ver. 8.11.0.4

I can confirm that this works with the following, (for now!)

Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia, Kernel 4.4.0-112.
