[SOLVED] Flatpacks running in "superuser" mode - is this OK?

Post by Ranthe » Wed Jan 10, 2018 4:03 am

I've been trying out various Flatpack applications(1) on Mint 18.3 MATE, and I've noticed that all the Flatpack apps run in "superuser" mode.

1) Is this normal and/or intentional?
2) Is this a good idea?
3) Can Flatpacks be run as a normal user, and if so, how?

Having successfully adapted to the Linux way of doing stuff where "superuser" is just used for specific system actions it came as a bit of a surprise to see Linux Flatpack apps behaving like Windows apps apparently needing elevated privileges to run... just wanted to check that I'm not inadvertently raising a security risk or something.

(1) In particular Krita 3.3.2 - while the AppImage works fine I want to take advantage of Flatpack's auto-update feature because I'm fed up with having to manually download a new AppImage and reset shortcuts every time Krita gets updated.

Check this bug report here:
https://github.com/mate-desktop/marco/issues/301
I'm also interested in what exactly is happening / how it's gonna be resolved... (i'm also on Mate as well)

According to that link, and I also looked at the other bug report linked there, it says it's running in super user mode but actually isn't. So, annoying but maybe not a catastrophe.

Prior thread on the issue: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=258472

FWIW, Fred Barclay thought the PID namespaces explanation makes sense.

BTW, it's Flatpak, no "c". An important difference when doing searches.
