I like my music.

Post by Bara-Bus »

Hi, I was wondering what good software for LinuxMint (Only) that will allow me to edit my music library.

1) Edit info
2) Normalize sound.
3) Edit the music for musical excerpts.

I appreciate your contributions.

Linux Mint Only? Mint is Ubuntu or (Debian based in LMDE). Ubuntu has more software available than other distros. It doesn't really make sense to want software only for Mint.

Info? You mean tags? Audacity will do that and there are separate apps for editing tags but I don't use tags much so I don't know much about them.

The one you'll probably see recommended most is Audacity, for good reason.

Hi "Bara-Bus",

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

+1 for Audacity.

As was already mentioned, please be more specific with your questions and requests. You can search the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" for these.

1) Edit info
What information "tags"? Some music applications have this built-in (Amarok). Look for "Picard" Music Brainz, "music tag",
"kid3", etc... in the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)"
Bara-Bus wrote:2) Normalize sound.
There are various standalone apps for normalizing audio files, some music applications have that built-in. Search for "normalize" in "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)"
Bara-Bus wrote:3) Edit the music for musical excerpts.
Sound editors like Audacity are great for this.

Hope this helps ...

I use Puddletag. It is very versatile.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install puddletag
Description: simple, powerful audio tag editor
puddletag is an audio tag editor (primarily created) for GNU/Linux
similar to the Windows program, Mp3tag. Unlike most taggers for
GNU/Linux, it uses a spreadsheet-like layout so that all the tags you
want to edit by hand are visible and easily editable.
.
The usual tag editor features are supported like extracting tag
information from filenames, renaming files based on their tags by
using patterns and basic tag editing.
.
Then there're Functions, which can do things like replace text, trim
it, do case conversions, etc. Actions can automate repetitive
tasks. You can import your QuodLibet library, lookup tags using
Amazon (including cover art), Discogs (does cover art too!), FreeDB
and MusicBrainz (and more).
.
Supported formats: ID3v1, ID3v2 (mp3), MP4 (mp4, m4a, etc.),
VorbisComments (ogg, flac), Musepack (mpc), Monkey's Audio (ape) and
WavPack (wv).
Strangely, I discovered that I had to manually create a folder:
/home/myusername/.config/puddletag
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI

Thanks guys I admit I am a little vague as I am a damaged human. My processes are much slower and therefore are unable to contribute to human society that well and on many days at all. I suffer with intense pain every day as if I were being tortured. No more about that!
This is my 4th or fifth attempt to use LinuxMint because it's the best OS for me. I have the use of Windows but I find my OS is compromised within a week of installation. It's depressing for me to say how many times I have installed Windows on my machines. Probably more than some manufacturers.
The reason for LinuxMint only is because I am not in the slightest interested in any of the other Linux distros as they don't have as much support except Ubuntu. Don't like Ubuntu, firstly it's name and secondly it's colours and thirdly it's layout. People may say LinuxMint is more Windows looking but to me it's more functional and easier to understand.

Moving on, Puddletag may be the one I want. I'll check it out tomorrow as the wife wants me to go to bed now. Audacity is good, used it before but it never fulfils my appetite to complete what I am trying to do with my file system.
If you cannot make sense of what I just wrote I'm sorry I'm tired.
Best wishes to all and thanks again.

For tags, I recommend kid3, and for audio editing, I recommend audacity. Also, mp3gain (now I think called easymp3gain) is apparently good for normalizing tracks; it's something Joe Collins uses or used a lot and heartily recommends, IIRC.
I'm also Terminalforlife on GitHub.

For tags, I use Easy Tag. For editing, I use Audacity, and for normalizing I use Gnormalize.
