Replace lame firefox error messages and pictures - how?

Post by Flemur »

Does anyone know how to eliminate or replace these wretched (dinosaur?) pictures and perhaps also get a decent error message, like "404 not found" instead of nonsense like "Hmm, firefox is lame." ?

I gather they're hidden inside some semi-proprietary database file...

Thanks!

I too find these cartoons extremely lame and unnecessary.

Maybe something like this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... /tryagain/
Thanks, but I don't want it to keep trying, I want it to not look and sound idiotic!

They're so amazingly poorly drawn.

The lack of useful error messages is perhaps even worse than the stupid pictures.

Anywho, I found two "omni.ja" files (~15Meg and ~28Meg), couldn't open them with any linux software but opened them with "windows explorer" in virtualbox, extracted all the files and searched thru (looked at) all the png files - no dinosaur pictures.

In omni.ja:
chrome/browser/content/browser/aboutNetError.xhtml
chrome://browser/content/illustrations/error-server-not-found.svg -> the dinosaur thingy
...with any linux software but opened them with "windows explorer" in virtualbox...
Edit: No windows / virtualbox needed... zip -FF omni.ja --out omni.jar

Yup, there they are. Thanks! I looked at the names of the svg files, and looked at some, but didn't look too hard because I didn't expect these to be svg rather than png. Also opening them is a pain, no easy browsing, at least with the stuff I have.

ANd that's the 34Meg file in

Code: Select all

firefox/browser/omni.ja
NOT the 17Meg file in

Code: Select all

firefox/omni.ja
...with any linux software but opened them with "windows explorer" in virtualbox...
Edit: No windows / virtualbox needed... zip -FF omni.ja --out omni.jar
That didn't work - the directory structure disappeared from omni.jar and the stupid dino pics weren't in the output file.

Under windows(virtualbox) I couldn't delete anything, even as admin. ... ?

Damn, no idea (didn't really checked that far). But i stumbled upon this article / maybe running this optimizejars script first & then 7zip will do the trick?

Thanks, I will look at that in a bit - my goal (yes, too much free time) is to remove or change those stupid pictures!

"A simple workaround is to rename the omni.ja file extension to .zip and Windows will be able to open and extract the files."
Windows (winrar) can open and extract the files, but it can't delete any of them - I get errors messages like "no file". Permissions checked and rechecked, file is copied to virtualbox, not on linux....

+1 against the cartoons. Also will not remember customizations and the bookmarks sidebar preferences.
I have pretty much quit using FF the last couple years but am considering purging *.*
