Linux Mint 18.3 KDE freezes

Post by Brave Waffle » Mon Jan 15, 2018 3:28 pm

Hello,

I'm using Linux Mint now for 3 days, so my knowlegde about this os isn't the best.
The system freezes randomly (Video Playback stopps, I can't move any open window, I can't click/open/type anything and the sound stopps 5-30sec later too). The mouse still moves on the screen but clicking on something doesn't do anything.
The Cpu usage is arround 30-60%, the ram usage is about 4GB (swap not used) and there ssd writes/reads almost nothing when the system freezes.
Memtest (from a Usb-stick) booted shows no errors.
I don't really know what could affect this since the Hardware works fine with Windows10.
Does someone know what could affect this?

The Hardware (~3weeks old):
Mainboard: MSI A320M PRO-VD/S
CPU: Ryzen 3 1200
Ram: 1x 8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport (Dual Rank, 2666MHz)
SSD: 480GB KingDian (~6months old)
Graphic: Geforce GT 730

Thanks for your help :)

Please post the output of this terminal command:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Enclose the results in code markers, which you can select from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.
There are no silly questions, but there are silly answers.

I would recommend you switch from the Open Source nouveau to the Proprietary nVidia Driver from Driver Manager.

Just to add to ClixTrix's response... To view/change the video/display driver, in the Main Menu look for something similar to System Settings. In the hardware section there is an app, "Driver Manager" (You probably can get to Driver Manager directly from the main menu too, instead of going through System Settings). Open it. It will take a while to refresh the cache. It should list drivers. Is there a "recommeded" one (i.e, nvidia-xxx).

Here are some other thoughts:

Since this is KDE, and it is a new install, maybe the file indexes are being built.
The good news, the initial build is done once. Go to System Setting < Workspace > File Search > Enable File Search
I don't use this feature, so can't say much more.

Turn off special effects or try different rendering backend.
System Settings > Hardware > Display and Monitor > Compositor > Enable compositor on startup
System Settings > Hardware > Display and Monitor > Compositor > Rendering backend

I noticed the kernel is 4.13. Maybe someone else can comment on this, one way or another. I've seen some problems with nvidia and this kernel version.

I did a fresh install of the system, changed the driver and used it for ~2h. It didn't froze. However, i want to encrypt the whole ssd with lvm. To make it easier for me, i reinstalled the system again (with the encryption option in the setup) and changed the driver after it. The password request at the start up looks like it got x2 bigger and i can't type anything in it. It also shows me that only on one display instead of both. When i start the system in the recovery mode, i can log in and boot from there normally. I didn't had time yet to check if the system still freezes.

The file search and compositor on startup where already enabled.
OpenGL2.0 was configured. I changed it now to 3.1. There's also XRender (never heared of it).

Not KDE. Standard Mint 18.3. Seems to freeze up after power management turns the screens off (for 20+ minutes).
