get rid of old wine for new wine

Post by mariaperson »

Hi,
I downloaded wine about 4 times, different ways and versions, while trying to install a continuously crashing windows app. So i think i need to delete all the wines i've collected? And just do a new clean wine install. Then maybe my app(wtlibrary2016 dvdrom) will stop crashing? So how do i know what wines i've got, and more importantly how to get rid of them?!
Thanks, Mariaperson
Ps> just tweaked the topic, b/c it sounded like i didn't like Wine...

Try this first:
sudo apt remove --purge --dry-run wine* to make sure nothing other than wine will be purged. If you're then sure about what is to be removed, use

sudo apt remove --purge wine*

don't forget if you remove wine and start fresh to delete .wine folder
after you have wine install start with a 32bit wine which is better
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine winecfg
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine winetricks -q msxml3 corefonts dotnet40

Third-party applications

Some applications require more tweaking than simply installing the application in order to work properly, such as manually configuring Wine to use certain Windows DLLs. The Wine project does not integrate such workarounds into the Wine codebase, instead preferring to focus solely on improving Wine's implementation of the Windows API. While this approach focuses Wine development on long-term compatibility, it makes it difficult for users to run applications that require workarounds. Consequently, many third-party applications have been created to ease the use of those applications that don't work out of the box within Wine itself. The Wine wiki maintains a page of current and obsolete third-party applications.[57]

Winetricks is a script to install some basic components (typically Microsoft DLLs and fonts) required for some applications to run correctly under Wine. The Wine project will accept bug reports for users of Winetricks, unlike most third-party applications. It is maintained by Wine developer Austin English.[58]
Q4Wine is an open Gui for advanced setup of Wine.
Wine-Doors is an application-management tool for the GNOME desktop which adds functionality to Wine. Wine-Doors is an alternative to WineTools which aims to improve upon WineTools' features and extend on the original idea with a more modern design approach.[59]
IEs4Linux is a utility to install all versions of Internet Explorer, including versions 4 to 6 and version 7 (in beta).[60]
Wineskin is a utility to manage Wine engine versions and create wrappers for macOS.[61]
PlayOnLinux is an application to ease the installation of Windows applications (primarily games). There is also a corresponding Macintosh version called PlayOnMac.
Bordeaux is a proprietary Wine GUI configuration manager that runs winelib applications. It also supports installation of third-party utilities, installation of applications and games, and the ability to use custom configurations. Bordeaux currently runs on Linux, FreeBSD, PC-BSD, Solaris, OpenSolaris, OpenIndiana,[62][63] and macOS computers.

Thanks to my responders! Appreciate your thoughts.
So, Trytip, when you say delete the .wine folder, you mean, go into the the folder icon at the bottom of my screen and find a folder with the word wine and delete it? The only one i see is a wine2.0.4 Was kinda surprised that it still existed with files in it, since i ran the commands per Catweazel : sudo apt remove --purge wine* And then I will be completely wine free, Dry of wine, at which point I go get new wine. Sounds like a plan, just looking for confirmation.Thanks.

the .wine folder is hidden in your home directory. Ctrl+H to show hidden files.

I can't see where you have mentioned your current Mint setup.
Open a terminal using Ctrl+Alt+ t or from your menu or panel.
type:
inxi -Fxz
then copy/paste those results back here.
I don't use wine but those who will know which version to refer will need this info.

I suggest you download 3.0 tar.gz
form here:
https://dl.winehq.org/wine/source/3.0/wine-3.0.tar.xz
This is an archive (zipped) file so after download right click and choose 'Extract to Here'
It will create a folder named 'wine 3.0'. Inside there is a Readme which will tell you how to proceed.

At the risk of now contributing to another mess of different versions :? , one fairly neat way of trying different Wine versions is with PlayOnLinux. POL has a minor annoying glitch if there is no "system" version of Wine, so I found it was best to install through the Software Manager both POL and whatever ancient version of Wine is in the Ubuntu repos (1.6, I think). Multiple versions of Wine can be installed through POL. (Some Windows programs have install scripts available, hardcoded to particular versions - Microsoft Office 2010 requires 1.7.52 for the scripted install, though you should then configure it to use a more recent version.)

Maria
I'm not sure why you started another thread on this matter, but you will be getting in a mess IMO with so many conflicting ideas. I'm not saying they are wrong, as it is possible to do things in many different ways.

But you didn't explain that you already had the wine builds PPA
Installing wine manually with make is just going to throw a spanner in things
And you obviously didn't understand me when in the other thread:
viewtopic.php?f=47&t=261781
I suggested to start fresh with a new .wine

Hope you manage to sort things out my friend
