No, you will get the version that's in the repositories, which may or may not be the latest version.

Unless of course you've set up a different repository. :P

This is what they say on their download page about the latest verion for Ubuntu/Mint/Elementary:
It is recommended to download the AppImage version until the release of Ubuntu 18.04.
https://kdenlive.org/download/
Latest stable AppImage (17.12.0) is available here:
https://files.kde.org/kdenlive/release/ ... mirrorlist.

To install, just download the file and make it executable, ( chmod +x ) in a terminal, then run it.

Hi "charroo",

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

Need to know which edition and version of Linux Mint you are currently using?

The Linux Mint repositories do not have the current or latest version of the wonderful Kdenlive video editor.

Kdenlive developers recommend using their AppImage package. For Linux Mint 17.x users the AppImage option is the only way to get to use the newer versions of Kdenlive. They also have "flatpak" and "snap" install options too. And, Kdenlive has a fair amount of recommended and suggested packages, so I recommend searching the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" for Kdenlive, right-click it, and install all of those too.

There is a PPA available for Linux Mint 18.x users to install and keep Kdenlive updated.

Kdenlive release : “Kdenlive” team
https://launchpad.net/~kdenlive/+archiv ... ive-stable

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kdenlive/kdenlive-stable

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt install kdenlive frei0r-plugins

Hope this helps ...

The reason they are most likely recommending the appimage until ubuntu 18.04 /Mint 19.x is because it requires dependencies that may not be available in 16.04.x /Mint 18.x so I would download and use the appimage they work great in mint.

I have LM 17.3. I tried to add the Kdenlive repository but I get an error:

Code: Select all

smarc@marc-desktop:~ > sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kdenlive/kdenlive-stable
'This PPA does not support trusty'
Cannot add PPA: ''This PPA does not support trusty''.
What should I do?

Hi "oligalma",

As was already stated, for Linux Mint 17.x or 18.x, Download their AppImage file, check permissions to run it (right-click the AppImage file, select permission tab, check executable, apply, ok. Then, double-click the AppImage file to run it. The PPA is for Linux Mint 18.x only.

Software packaged as AppImage files require the "fuse" package to be installed before running them, which is usually already installed in Linux Mint. If "fuse" is not installed, run the command below, or search for "fuse" in the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" and install it that way.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install fuse
Hope this helps ...

Hi charroo,
You can read about AppImage here:
https://appimage.org/
The AppImage format is a format for packaging applications in a way that allows them to run on a variety of different target systems (base operating systems, distributions) without further modification.

Applications packaged as an AppImage can run on many distributions (including Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, CentOS, elementaryOS, Linux Mint, and others)

One app = one file = super simple for users: just download one AppImage file, make it executable, and run

No unpacking or installation necessary

No root needed

No system libraries changed

Works out of the box, no installation of runtimes needed

https://github.com/AppImage/AppImageKit ... /README.md

When I installed Kdenlive from an appimage download it comes up in the full screen mode and I am unable to minimize it (no typical "- + X" controls are seen) and it stays full screen even when I go to Settings > Exit Full Screen mode and unmark that option. And the Ctrl +Shift + F command does not change anything. And I have tried clicking and dragging the corners as you would in most apps but that will not work either.

I had installed Kdenlive by going to this page downloading the kdenlive-18.04.0-x86_64.AppImage image file and adding a launcher to the image file on my desktop.

https://files.kde.org/kdenlive/release/ ... mirrorlist

When the unable to minimize issue came up I went to this page:

https://launchpad.net/~kdenlive/+archiv ... ive-stable

And followed the procedure there to run these two command lines from a terminal window:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kdenlive/kdenlive-stable
sudo apt-get update

Restarted Mint Linux and when I started Kdenlive it was in a reduced size window and would shuttle between full screen and reduced from the top right controls or the Settings > Full Screen Mode menu choice or if I used the Ctrl + Shift + F keyboard command.

The problem I had after the appimage install was that the app windows was maximized to a size larger than my laptop's full screen display and I was not seeing the title bar and "- + X" controls on the right end of the bar and also the Ctrl + Shift + F command was not working

The version I have installed, after using the appimage install and then doing the above to fix it, is still 18.04 so I have a up to date install.

So I am now ready to learn how to use Kdenlive!
