Symptom: so pc boots ok then within a few min of browsing or playing audio or video the screen freezes with a loop of audio.
i have tried updates to video drivers and apps but no result. this has been going on for 2 months now. it might have something
to do with Xorg and video driver but tried different versions but no success. also tried to update kernel but couldnt update.
any help is very appreciated @ this point as its impossible to get any work done when the system crashes randomly .
i have also looked into log files but doesn't seem to log anything

Please test memory with memtest in grub and your disk with smart.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Smartmontools
Install Ubuntu Kernel Update utility . Using it you can upgrade kernel.

thanks so i did the mem test passed
i couldn't get the smart tool to work
and i have used ukuu it was what i needed and updated to Kernel 4.14
now it only crashes 1 or 2 a day so its a lot better but still cant pinpoint where the issues is
the clue here is when im running and doing lots of work and a few programs are open it will freeze
i still feel it might be something with graphics related so i have a viewsonic monitor connected via hdmi cable
if there is a logging tool that would log the freeze crash that could be an option

Code: Select all

dmesg |grep -i error
command may give some clue . Preferred to run it when problem occurs.

Don't know if it's related but you could try turning off c6 power states in your bios.

Another option is to install Mint KDE which doesn't require as many resources as cinnamon. You can test it by using it on Live usb/cd.
