[UPDATE-SOLVED] Flatpack FileZilla

Post by nakednorman » Fri Jan 26, 2018 11:17 am

I have mint 18.3 Cinnamon on its own SSD. Grub on this disk allows booting from another SSD containing Windows 10.
I use FileZilla on a fairly frequent basis, from both Mint and Windows.
I had FileZilla 3.15.0.2 from Software Manager but this was made to look pretty antiquated by version 3.30.0 on Windows.

However, Mint 18.3 brought me Flatpack and Software Manager now offers a Flatpack version of FileZilla. I couldn't determine which version of FileZilla was being offered in Flatpack (it just said "stable"), so I tried it. I was pleasantly surprised that it was FileZilla 3.30.0.
A small bug was that it errors on startup with "An assertion failed! ./src/gtk/toplevel.cpp(988): assert "m_widget" failed in Show(): invalid frame" but you can continue past the error.
This is a known error in "wxWidgets", see https://trac.filezilla-project.org/tick ... format=rss and it was fixed a couple of months ago.
Presumably an old version of wxWidgets is comming "encased" with FileZilla in Flatpack as there doesn't appear to be a package called wxWidgets on my base system.

I'd appreciate any pointers on how to resolve this problem.

Hello nakednorman and Welcome to Linux Mint forums,

As far as I know you'll have to file a bug report with the developers of the Flatpac. I'm not sure exactly how you do that though, maybe someone more familiar with flatpacks can answer that.

But flatpacks are out of the control of Mint so there will be nothing we can do here.
That being said it is possible to install 3.30 on mint these pages should help you do that.

I prefer the ppa version.
Good Luck.

Thanks kc1di,

Filezilla 3.30 is built for Debian 9.0 (Stretch) which causes compatibility problems with Mint 18.3
This is why I was delighted to find it 'Flatpaked' - and it mostly works!
Sadly the 'known error' that I've run into is fixed, but not in Flatpak - and there doesn't appear to be a clear bug report path.
I'll live with it and watch for updates.
Regards,
NN

Sorry can't be of more help. But when it comes to flatpacks I'm not sure there is any path to file bugs to the original developers.
Not even sure who does the packaging for flatpacks.
Hope you will not have to wait long :(

I finally found how to report a bug with Flatpak !
You have to do it via Github - and when I got there someone had already reported it :)

Having found my way to flatpak/filezilla on github, I entered my comments on their 'forum'.
Within 24 hours Nick Richards had updated everything and fixed the problem.
Filezilla 3.30 now works perfectly from Flatpak (I uninstalled my old version first).
