Can someone make this keyboard layout (persian phonetic keyboard)?[SOLVED]

Post by NathanR » Tue Feb 06, 2018 1:20 pm

I really need to use this keyboard for school but unfortunately there's no linux version of it. I've tried my best to create this on my own with some of the other resources already available (xkeycaps and a failed download of keyboardlayouteditor) but I'm afraid I'm out of my depth. Can anyone recreate this?

If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help, and keeps the forum clean.
I am using Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64 bit with AMD processor . Memory 8GB

That's pretty confusing honestly. I read through it and I don't understand much of what they're getting at.

Frankly, it's neither reasonable nor realistic to expect anyone to volunteer to program this for you. OTOH, perhaps you know this already, but in case not, be aware the standard Persian keyboard layout (ISIRI 9147) is already installed on your Linux system. You just have to enable it in Keyboard (see System Settings or Control Center, depending on your desktop, or you can use the Menu search box). Explain the problem to your instructor and see whether he/she will permit you to use that. Would be more useful in the long run anyway (albeit, perhaps a little more difficult to learn).

Agreed. The thing with Linux support forums is that those who know enough to do such things have no patience for noobs who can't be bothered to do any research themselves.

I'm familiar with the Persian keyboard. Unfortunately it's not super intuitive, hence why I wanted this one. If this is really more than a ten minute job, then I do apologize for wasting your precious moments. I used to do this on windows for myself and for others and didn't find it to be as daunting of a task. I really just don't have the familiarity with the system needed to figure this out, even with the guide.

And frankly, I don't appreciate the insinuation that I'm sitting here begging from a position of willful ignorance. I did the research, tried multiple methods (as stated above). I wouldn't be posting here if I didn't feel like I was out of options.

Solution:

I finally got Keyboard Layout Editor working. I made a blank one and than edited the original "ir" file with what I came up with. You'll have to use "chown" commands to get ownership of the directory and the file. It's different than the one I posted but it's more favorable for my use.

This keyboard:
// Replace all the way up to the Kurdish section of the file
// Iranian keyboard layout
////////////////////////////////////////
// Persian layout,
// based on
// Information Technology – Layout of Persian Letters and Symbols on Computer Keyboards
// ISIRI 9147 – 1st Edition
// Institute of Standards and Industrial Research of Iran
// http://www.isiri.org/UserStd/DownloadStd.aspx?id=9147
