waterfox update<solved>

Post by chushingura » Fri Feb 09, 2018 3:09 pm

<r>I have two computers running 18.3 sylvia with identical settings and repositories. The one updates Waterfox through update manager, no problem. The other gives me the following message.

Code: Select all

Could not download all repository indexes

I also cannot extract and run the update via Waterfox browser update....Ideas please.

waterfox update pt 2

Post by chushingura » Sat Feb 10, 2018 10:49 am

I have managed to update waterfox to 56.0.4.1 by completely uninstalling 56.3 and then reinstalling the updated one. Now,and I'm sure this is very basic, I can only start the browser from the file list. It does not show up on the menu list. Help please. P.S. I have the same problem on ubuntu 16.10.

What do you mean when you say 'file list'? And what is your desktop environment?

I did it from the Cinnamon Menu Editor. And once it's in the menu, you can rightclick it there and choose Add to panel or Add to Desktop.

Start typing 'menu' in the search box on your menu and it'll show up.

It's all become a bit confusing. To be concise, I have the Waterfox folders in home and can only use it from there. How do I get it out?

The Cinnamon Menu Editor is a very easy, GUI based tool that you can use to make a shortcut in your menu. It's the easiest way I know. If you don't see it when you type the word 'menu' in your menu search box, you can find it in the 'preferences' category in your menu.

Hmm, that surprises me. I'm running 18.3 too.
Can you post the result of the following terminal command, enclosed in code tags?

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Didn't manage to install it. I open it from the file and put a link on the desktop to my home page. I will reinstall it when updates occur.

Well, at least you can use Waterfox for now. But I remain puzzled on why you seem to be missing a normal and standard part of your installation. I hope someone else can help with that.
If you want something that serves pretty much the same function, you could install Alacarte from the Software Manager.

Hi, Moem. Hi, chushingura.

I cannot tell for sure whether it will be exactly the same way on Mint 18.3.
But I am pretty certain that here on Mint 17.1, right after the default installation, the Cinnamon Menu Editor was only available in this way:
  • Right click on the [Menu] icon in the lower left-hand corner.
  • Click on "Setup ..." (translating back from German, so the English term might be "Setup ..." or "Configure ...", I guess.)
  • The window which will be opened is titled "Applets".
In the lower part near the window bottom there is a very wide button labelled [Open Menu Editor]. Click on this button.
  • The Cinnamon Menu Editor will open.
Here is how I then made the same Cinnamon Menu Editor visible inside the Application Menu under Preferences:
  • Opened Cinnamon Menu Editor like explained above.
  • In the left pane navigated to Applications => Preferences. Clicked on Preferences.
  • This will make the right panel display all items which belong to "Preferences".
  • Located the item named "Cinnamon Menu Editor" and ticked the little box next to its name, thus enabling it, i.e. making the Menu actually display the item.
  • Closed the Cinnamon Menu Editor. Closed the "Applets" window.
  • From now on going to [Menu] => Preferences would offer "Cinnamon Menu Editor" in the "Preferences" list.
Alternative way of opening "Cinnamon Menu Editor":
  • Press the keyboard shortcut <Alt><F2>.
  • You will be prompted to enter a command.
  • Type cinnamon-menu-editor and press enter.
  • The "Cinnamon Menu Editor" will be launched.
HTH,
Karl

Great stuff! i installed alacarte and it put the cinnamon editor in the preference list of the main menu. I then removed the alacarte and editor stayed in the menu. (so far,, I haven't rebooted yet) I have used it to place the Waterfox link on the desktop. This means that I still have not installed Waterfox, as was my original intention, but I am now using Waterfox in the same way I use Tor browser, OK. and I have learnt alot on the way. Thanks.
