The VLC version available from the software centre is very dated, will vlc 3.0.0 be made available?
VLC 3.0.0 can now play DVDs which the earlier versions could not.
vlc upgrade to 3.0.0?

vlc has had dvd playback ability as long as I remember.VLC 3.0.0 can now play DVDs which the earlier versions could not.

Just a heads up and I suspect it won't be an issue for everyone.... I updated VLC from 2.2.2. on my rig and it was an absolute dog, stuttering video city.
Downgraded again and all fine, plays DVD too. If you're after a more upgraded player smplayer is the way to go, the latest PPA version works fine too.
Code: Select all

Re: vlc upgrade to 3.0.0?
If you're running 17.x the vlc and smplayer repo versions don't have HEVC playback, so there's a pretty good case there for a newer ppa version.
In 18.x the repo versions of both programs play HEVC fine. Though, as usual, SMplayer plays them a lot better. It just has much better performance. I can't see much functional need for a newer version.

Sounds like a solution for that situation is to move off version 17.
Re: vlc upgrade to 3.0.0?
That'd be my suggestion if media playback is important and there are no dire hardware support issues with your machine and 18.x.
I know it seems pretty silly that it took this long to get repo versions supporting x265/HEVC, but it took a long time for x264/AVC to get proper open source support too. ANd not just in Linux, Windows was similar.
