Mint 17 Cinnamon: Totem & VLC: Can't get either to display subtitles

Post by tinker123 » Sat Feb 17, 2018 7:15 pm

Linux Mint 17 Qianna

Cinnamon Desktop

Totem 3.10.1

VLC 2.1.6

I've been trying to play a movie in *.mp4 format.

I've tried both VLC and Totem, loading the *.srd files. Neither displays the subtitles. I went through the preferences of each.

I could use some clues for solving this.

Thanks

Just a thought...
Have you tried to open the folder where the movie and subtitle files are as ROOT? That possibly might do the trick.

As a general rule, subtitles should have the same name as video file, with a different extension. Most video players will auto-load the subtitles when the name is the same.

Probably just a typo, but subtitle files use an srt extension, not srd. If you've really got subs using srd I'm not surprised they don't work...

Hi tinker123,

I just read your post and some of the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

+1 Rename the subtitle files from "something.srd" to "something.srt", and it does help if they have the same name as the video file.

+1 I would not recommend playing the videos as a super "root" user, especially if you did not create the video file yourself.

There are some excellent applications that can retrieve subtitle files for most videos, check the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)", search for "subtitle".

In addition to the great VLC and Totem, there is a wonderful multimedia player called "SMplayer" that you might consider installing and trying. VLC also has a plugin option for subtitles.

Hope this helps ...
