Krunner Crashes

Post by banjo » Mon Feb 19, 2018 2:52 pm

Every time I try to search for a command using krunner, it crashes with a segmentation fault.

I simply right click on the desktop and select "Run command...", then I type one character into the box and krunner crashes.

Here is the "Developer Information", which I do not know how to parse.

Code: Select all

Application: krunner (krunner), signal: Segmentation fault

Is anyone else seeing this? I have done an internet search and tried some tricks like disabling folder search, calculator etc. but it doesn't help.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. My system information.

Re: Krunner Crashes

Hi banjo,

I just ran the excellent "Krunner" in my Linux Mint KDE 18.2 system (which can be run from the menu key search box, right-clicking the desktop, or "Alt+F2"), and it worked well. Do you have the "Search" options enabled in the System Settings menu, might require rebooting after enabling?

Hope this helps ...

This has been going on for quite a while, after several reboots.

File search is enabled, and also most of the items under "Plasma Search", the plugins. One online discussion I saw said that disabling all of the plugins made it stop crashing. I have not tried that yet. I will give that a go.

At one point, when I tried to run search from the start menu it crashed my entire KDE session. But it mostly just causes a seg fault in krunner.

Thanks for the response.

If I can find a workaround I will post it.

Update: I have found a workaround to keep krunner from crashing. I opened the System Settings=>Search page and disabled File Search. Then I disabled all of the plugins except for Applications. After that, I can run krunner to search for applications and it doesn't crash.

It is too late tonight to continue on this, but when I get a chance, I will re-enable the features one by one until krunner breaks. At that point, I should be able to discern which plugin is causing the problem.

Unfortunately, if I run the search from the start menu, plasma still crashes, so that has not been fixed by this workaround.

Another Update: I have gone through all of the search plugins and enabled them one at a time to see which ones are causing krunner to crash. At this point, if any of the following plugins is enabled, krunner crashes after typing any letters into the search box.

Audio
Control Audio Player
PDF documents
Flolder
Power
Video

I do not see any obvious commonality among the plugins that fail. Search was enabled for all of these tests.

I have also seen it crash occasionally when I type in a search that does not match anything, and then it works fine if I run it again.

This is a very strange symptom. I think I have sent krunner down a path through the code that most users do not see, and it is crashing on a null pointer it isn't checking for. But that is just a guess. The current crashes are not giving me a backtrace in the crash dialog, so I cannot post that information.

Since I rarely use the tool other than to look for applications whose names I cannot remember, I might just turn off everything else and just use it for that. I think this is a bug in the code that shows up rarely, and there is no way I can trouble shoot it any farther without running it inside a development environment.

OK. Never mind. Krunner started crashing again. I have no idea what is going on. So I have have disabled everything in search except Applications since that is all I use it for anyway. It appears to work somewhat that way, but if not, it doesn't matter. Nobody else seems to be having this problem, and it is not worth trashing my system in a vain effort to get it working. I have given up on krunner.
