Kdenlive: Rendering takes a lot of time

Post by oligalma »

I'm trying to render a 3-hour-length video (a gameplay of a MS-DOS game) with Kdenlive and it says "Remaining time: 14 hours" and the progress bar seems not to move. Is this normal? Should I upgrade my hardware? I have 8 GB of RAM and the CPU specs are the following:

All the RAM in the world won't help that little thing with video rendering. If you want to do video rendering I think you're going to have to go much bigger.

14 hours is long, but that could be quite normal depending on renderer settings, given the length of the video and yes, as mentioned, your CPU. Unoess you have a pretty damn fast machine you're going to spend more time encoding video than watching the result.

Ok, thanks for your answers. I'll buy another CPU then...

By the way, are there currently CPUs without Meltdown and Spectre problems?

Hi oligalma,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

The more powerful your computer the better when it comes to video and audio editing and gaming, like a powerful multi-core CPU (the more the better), lots of system memory (ram), a good to great video card with a fair amount video ram, lots of drive space and an SSDrive. From what you showed, an Intel dual core celeron is not very powerful even though it has a respectable speed.

There are various way to make rendering a video quicker, like telling the video editor to use whatever CPU cores are available (usually automatic check settings), reducing the video resolution size (ex: from HD 1080p at 30fps to HD 720p at 25fps), using proxy clips (kdenlive), and which final video format type to render to may help as well like ".webm" is pretty fast, and making sure your Linux System is running at its best performance - see link below.

Speed up your Mint! - Easy Linux tips project (great Linux website, turn off adblocking for this website)

As for the "Meltdown and Spectre " issues, there are posts in this forum regarding this, and updating the Linux Kernel will help with these.

Hope this helps ...

Hi oligalma,

I do not see anything wrong with the results of the "inxi -Fxzd" console terminal command, so that is a good thing.

Ok, you have a good nVidia video card and a decent amount of system memory (8gb of ram), but the Intel dual core Celeron is slowing you down for these type of tasks. If you plan on doing more video editing or gaming, I would recommend an Intel i5 or i7 CPU with as many cores as you can get and as fast as you can afford.

Also, you are using the excellent Kdenlive on Linux Mint KDE 17.3 which means you are not using their newest version unless you have downloaded and are using their AppImage file which is the only way to get the newer Kdenlive on Linux Mint 17.x. In addition to telling Kdenlive to use multi-cores, there might be settings in Kdenlive to allow using the GPU of the video card which may also help, but might not.
Current AppImage download file link
http://files.kde.org/kdenlive/release/K ... 4.AppImage

Using a current version of "ffmpeg" version 3 will probably help too.

Can I upgrade to an i5 or i7 without changing the main board?

In these page are shown the compatible CPUs:

Hi oligalma,

As I suspected according to the link below, no you cannot upgrade to an i5 or i7 CPU using this motherboard (mainboard), but you could upgrade the processor to a "Intel Pentium Dual-Core" (see bottom of link) for probably a very little amount of money, and this would help. But, it would not be anywhere near as fast or as powerful as an i5 or i7 CPU.

Update I just did a quick check on the Internet for the processor below, and it is around $70 us, if you can find it. For that money, you would be better off getting a new motherboard and CPU, or getting a used computer with a better CPU.

CPU-Upgrade: ASRock G41M-VS3 processor support and specifications
- ex: E6800, 3.33 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 2 MB cache, Wolfdale
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASRock/G41M-VS3.html#cs

In order to use an i5 or i7 CPU you would need a different motherboard that supports these processors and the related hardware, maybe a more powerful power supply, maybe different system memory ram modules, etc...

Hope this helps ...

If the 17.3 repo version of kdenlive did not have multicore support by default in what sense would it be 'excellent'? It'd be garbage.

And that machine ain't anywhere near powerful enough for gpu based encoding, which BTW doesn't give you as good quality video as CPU based. SOunds counter intuitive but true.
