MS Fonts

Post by nick67+ » Sun Mar 04, 2018 3:11 am

Hello,

I have just installed Mint 18.3 XFCE on my wife's laptop. She is generally very happy with it, apart from one thing. We are unable to install MS Fonts. The is crucial for her as she is currently in the middle of a college course. I have tried everything - PPA's, using the Software Centre, using the command line. I believe there is a problem with Source Forge.

A friend who uses Peppermint OS, had a similar problem. One of the administrators said the ttf-mscorefonts-installer link was broken. They fixed the package with a working link, and now it downloads with no problem.

Is someone able to do similar for Mint 18.3? I'm desperately trying to wean my wife off Windows.

Many thanks for listening
Nick

In a terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

And if you want more fonts (not necessarily by Microsoft) - you could just copy them:
  • Put your fonts on somewhere visible from your Linux system (a Windows partition, a USB flash drive, a machine accessible over the network etc.)
  • Be root on your Mint machine (or run the following with sudo)
  • Copy a bunch of fonts you like to a new directory under /usr/local/share/fonts/
  • Run fc-cache -fv and make sure the new fonts register properly with the font-cache mechanism

right now this morning the ttf-mscorefonts-installer is broken - it can't find the links to sorceforge- gets a 404 error. so if you haven't installed them yet you may want to wait a bit. Cheers.

Sourceforge is down and that's why mscorefonts installer will not work at this time, according to their twitter feed they have been having problems since yesterday and are working on it, but have no ETA for it being back up.
That explains why it's not working right now.
mscorefonts-installer uses a connection to sourceforge to download the fonts.

Hi nick67+,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

The link below explains in detail how to get or use the fonts from a MS Windows partition, or even from their DVD or a MS Windows .iso file, if for whatever reasons you cannot get them from the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM).

Microsoft fonts - ArchWiki
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Microsoft_fonts

FYI: Anyone can install most fonts easily into their system using the methods described in this post and various file managers, font managers, console terminal commands, etc...

FYI-2: There are many free fonts available including MS Windows fonts from various websites.
Fonts 101
http://www.fonts101.com/

I just downloaded the archive file for MS Core Fonts 2 from SourceForge. After I downloaded and extracted this archive file, these fonts do not seem to be like the ones I already have installed, maybe a bad download.
mscorefonts2 - Browse /sources at SourceForge.net
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mscore ... s/sources/

Hope this helps ...

Sourceforge is now back up and the ttf-mscorefonts-installer is now working again. So if you tried to install and it failed just do a reinstall.
