Wireshark, wireless interface with a lan connection

Post by h3r0 »

I have ventured into the world of Linux for the first time so please, excuse my ignorance as I'm sure it will be apparent.

I'm trying to use wireshark to monitor my home network. I've been having some problems with my wireless connections so I figured this would be a fun project to play with.
I installed Linux mint (newest distro on this site) on a tower I have in my office so I could just buy a new drive and use it solely for Linux.
My tower doesn't have a wireless card. I have used wireshark before on windows on the same machine and it was able to see my wireless traffic/interface, which I'm assuming has something to do with Windows' network manager.
I understand Linux is nothing like Windows but I was wondering if it may be possible to achieve the same result with Mint to capture all traffic from my router.
I've searched around but am tired of running around in circles on this.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

PS I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I wasn't sure whether to put this in software or networking.

have you tried the command iwconfig? there is some wireless card detected?
have you tried to start wireshark with sudo privileges?
