Is it possible to install Gitkraken on a 32 bit machine?

Post by deepakdeshp » Fri Mar 16, 2018 7:46 am

Hello,
I am running Mint Cinnamon 18.3 32 bits and want to install gitkraken. But there is no download available for a 32 bit application on the gitkraken download page.

that Linux *.deb file is an amd64 file, and so is the *.tar.gz file.
- they won't work on your 32bit system

If there is a better client than gitkraken, I would happily choose it.

You could go to the Contact Us page and request they Release the (32 bit Git)Kraken!

Kidding aside, your sig line says you're using 64 bit Cinnamon. Is this for a different computer?

You're on a losing streak with a 32 bit machine these days. Increasingly it's just not worth developers' time to support such niche hardware.

That's the machine I use in my machine and I don't have any control over it's architecture.

There is a 32 bit Windows version. Duel boot or Virtualbox or Wine could be options?

Rather than that ,I would prefer another good git client which has a 32 bit version

Have you tried plugging "git" into the Software Manager? I'm on 64 bit and had a result named git (among others) that looked promising and led me to giteye as a front end, I think, that does have a 32 bit version.

See if this is something you might be looking for: https://www.collab.net/products/giteye

I don't know anything about git so I may be way off base here.

Not niche per-se. When doing development for embedded systems, particularly battery operated embedded systems, the target will generally be 32-bit because you are trying to maximize battery life and, quite frankly, few, if any, embedded systems need a 64-bit processor. One can eliminate many potential problems by utilizing a 32-bit host for cross compiling. Cross compiling down from a 64-bit host is __always__ a PITA because someone, somewhere, missed something when writing up the configuration instructions. These misses don't cause problems when your build host is 32-bit using the same kernel and source repo as the custom embedded build. You can walk into any hospital in America or any other industrialized country and find hundreds, if not thousands of these systems. While it is true our 32-bit build host is generally in a VM these days, we still need the 32-bit host.

As long as battery life matters we will still be using 32-bit operating systems. Even if the CPU is capable of running a 64-bit OS, such as the Raspberry Pi, one uses a 32-bit OS because of the tiny RAM. The more RAM you have, the shorter your battery life.

In case anyone else is interested, I did find this page with a list of Git GUI clients for Linux.

https://git-scm.com/download/gui/linux
