[SOLVED] Thunderbird 1:52.6 Stuck in Draft Page

Post by julianvb » Fri Mar 16, 2018 4:21 pm

2018-03-16

My Linux Mint 18.2 machine has been having a Thunderbird problem since a week ago. I simply can't get it out of the Draft page even after re-installing Thunderbird 1.52,6 from Synaptic. Any help from this forum will be greatly appreciated.

Cosmos,

Thanks very much. Unfortunately this forum does not allow me to post even a 280kb image file to illustrate my problem. I just cannot read or see any messages, old or new.

I hope one day this site's management folks will wake up to reality. This limitation has been extremely frustrating, unbearable and self-defeating !

The page looks like what follows:
___________________________________________________
File Edit View Go Message Tools Help
--------------------------------------------------------
__| Draft |____________________________________________
Get Messages | Write | Chat | Address Book | Tag |Quick Filter
_____________________________________________________
Unread | Starred | Contact |Tag | Attachment

Julian, your attempt to visualize your problem as a kind of sketch doesn't make me smarter.

Regarding screen shots: You have 2 choices:
Either convert the picture to jpg. I have uploaded here in the last years very detailed picture without extending the size limit (which is 100 KB). With other picture formats this will not work.
Or upload the picture to a picture hoster (like imgur) and link it here.

On posting images, in particular those larger than can be uploaded to the forum server:

The workaround or solution which permits you to present larger images in your posts can be found in the forum FAQ actually.
FAQ: Can I post images? wrote:Can I post images?
Yes, images can be shown in your posts. If the administrator has allowed attachments, you may be able to upload the image to the board. Otherwise, you must link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server, e.g. http://www.example.com/my-picture.gif. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor images stored behind authentication mechanisms, e.g. hotmail or yahoo mailboxes, password protected sites, etc. To display the image use the BBCode [img] tag.
In brief: you upload your screenshot to a free image hoster. You post the link to your uploaded image in your message.
Smart users find out how to make use of the [rimg] tag in order to display small previews of their screenshots in their posts.
HTH.

Cosmos,

The file I attempted to upload was a 280kb .jpg file. What I tried to reconstruct in my last message is what the Thunderbird page essentially looks like. I see only this Draft page whenever I open Thunderbird,. Perhaps I should use another Linux e-mail client on this particular machine even though my other LM18.2 machines' Thunderbird works fine. Thanks.

Without a picture I am more or less blind. So let us try a "blind" attempt:

Create a fresh new user account and see, how TB displays there.

Not necessary if you do what most users do when posting screenshots and what had been explained above: here

Hello, julianvb.

The probem very likely is that you have - willingly or unwillingly - disabled the vertical panel "Accounts/Folderlist".
You can re-enable it by opening the Thunderbird menu, navigating to "View" > "Window Layout" > "Accounts/Folderlist" and re-enable "Accounts/Folderlist".

As soon as the "Accounts/Folderlist" panel is re-enabled, it should be trivial to switch away from the "Drafts" folder.

HTH,
Karl

Karl,

Thanks for your advice. I'll try it next.
I think reducing the image file size satisfies the form's requirement and gets the job done without doing any extra work. Call it the lazy person's way if you will.

Cosmos and Karl,

I think my Thunderbird e-mail account was to buggy to be fixed. This time I removed the .thunderbird directory completely before re-installing Thunderbird 1.52.6 and recreating my e-mail account. Everything seems to be working again. Thanks very much.

My advice to test with a test user account would had revealed the cause (defective TB-profile) very quickly.

Cosmos,
Thanks for reminding me of this advice. I'll try that next time when TB goes bad.

Hopefully this will never happen. I use TB since 15 years without a TB-profile breakage.
