Impress Runs Poorly in Mint 18.,3 [SOLVED]

Post by rgand »

I do presentations generated in LibreOffice Impress. I can make them and work with them just fine but playback is unacceptable in Mint 18.3. In Mint 17.3 it was great. When I upgraded, I found that I can no longer give good presentations with it. When I change slides, the screen flashes completely white before showing the next slide. It even does it on presentations I made with Mint 17.3 so I know it is some difference with Mint 18.3. Fortunately I have Linux Lite on one computer so I can use the presentations I generate. Linux Lite does work great but it would be nice to be able to use Mint 18.3 since it's a much nicer platform. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I keep all updates current. My system:

Hi rgand,

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

You are welcome...

Those are great commands and they help you and everyone else here understand what system you are running and to identify certain potential setup issues. I do not see anything wrong with the results of the "inxi -Fxzd" console terminal command, so that is a good thing. Looks like a really nice computer.

There is a new "inxi" command available called "pinxi" that is even more impressive, see post link below:

Your computer should be running everything fairly quickly considering you have an i7 CPU with 16gb of system memory. Using an SSDrive (SSD) would help tremendously.

There are various ways to make your system perform at its best, and certain applications also have their own performance tweaks.

- Speed up your Mint! - Easy Linux tips project (Great Linux website)
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/3

- Are you using the newest update to LibreOffice 1.6.x? They have a stable PPA to keep this office suite up to date.
  • Using OpenGL may help speed things up in its setup, Tools ->Options ->LibreOffice ->View
LibreOffice 6.0 is now Available via Its PPA for Ubuntu – Website for Students
https://websiteforstudents.com/libreoff ... and-18-04/

LibreOffice Fresh : “LibreOffice Packaging” team
https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one:
Click "Select All" above command, right click the highlighted command, select Copy (or Ctrl+Insert), click in the console terminal window, and right click paste (or Shift+Insert), repeat for each command.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa

Code: Select all

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade && sudo apt autoremove

- You might also consider installing and using "Calligra Stage", "Scribus" new version, or other applications like slideshow movie makers, like "ffDiaporama", Imagination, etc... If your presentation(s) are automatic and non-interactive, then you can also incorporate them into videos (record the desktop) and use video editors and or slideshow movie makers to enhance them even further.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, this computer is a fine one. I don't even have a desktop computer any more. I know that an SSD would help but since both drives have an installation of Mint on them, I have to be satisfied with the SSHD hybrid drive. That alone sped things up.

Heck, yeah! It'll take me a while to go through it all but that I will do and see if I can get it working right. There's no earthly reason it shouldn't because the other computer with Linux Lite on it is an OLD slow machine with minimal memory and such. In fact that one didn't have the oomph to run Mint properly so I had to put Lite on it.

The version of LibreOffice I have is what was installed with Mint. Looks like version 5.1.6.2.

Hi rgand,

You are welcome...

You are using an older version of LibreOffice and the newer one has many updates and improvements. Use their LibreOffice PPA to keep this updated.

Upgrading to LibreOffice 6 did the trick. I'll mark this thread solved.

I still intend to go through your other suggestions.

Many thanks for the help.
