Recently, several times when I'd click on say the 'edit' menu in Writer or Calc the box would come up blank gray.
I'm using Mate 18.3 and the LO is 5.1.6.2 on an 8-year-old Gateway SX2380 with an AMD quad and 4 GB RAM.
My solution has been to reboot, but I'm concerned that the original HD may be going bad, or perhaps the version of LO is too old (like me!).
Advice appreciated.

Re: LibreOffice loses submenus
Have you tried just uninstalling LibreOffice and then reinstalling it?
I have done that when the version in the Software Manager messed up.
I went back to Software Manager and clicked on Remove.
Reinstalled it then from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/
that resolved my problems.
you won't loose any documents, but it would be safer to back them up first.

Close LO completely inclusive the quick starter.
Open your file manager and make hidden files visible (ctrl-h). Navigate in your home into the folder .config and rename the subfolder libreoffice to libreoffice.bck. Start LO and check.
