Linux Mint 18 With VM

Post by StevenC21 » Mon Mar 19, 2018 11:05 pm

Hey guys! Its my first post here, so bear with me. Basically, I need to be able to create a Windows 7 Virtual Machine from within Linux Mint. The issue is, after I've set it up in VirtualBox, and I've launched and started the installation... it crashes my PC. The computer just freezes & hangs. What should I do?

First question, did you install VM from the Software Manager?

if so, that is the problem.

For a very recent thread on the same subject see viewtopic ... 0&t=264238

I would run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge --autoremove virtualbox{,-\*}

as suggested by @Termy to get rid of the installed VB and every other residue.

Then you could download the latest version of VB from Oracle direct at https://download.virtualbox.org/virtual ... _amd64.deb

plus the corresponding Guest Additions from https://www.virtualbox.org/download/tes ... 120528.iso.

I did not download VirtualBox from the repo. Also, the "guest additions" link is broken.

The question is not, what you not did, but what you actually use. You find the version for VB in the help menu -> about.

There is/was an issue with kernel version and VB version. Kernel 4.13 and VB5.0.40 don't like each other, there are several recent posts to this effect - VB locks up mint. I found out the hard way. Think there was also a problem with some later VB versions.

I am using VB 5.0.40 after all! I'll try to fix that now.

Hmm... I have gotten an error when attempting to install VirtualBox from the .deb package. It is complaining about an unsatisfiable dependency.

That was to be expected and cannot work. Mint 18 is based on Ubuntu xenial (= 16.04). You downloaded the wrong file.

Hmm. So I will need to download the 16.04 file then?

Possibly. You did not provide your system specs, so nobody can give the answer for sure. If you have Mint 18.x, than you need the version for Ubuntu 16.04, in case of Mint 17.x you need the version for Ubuntu 14.04. You also need to take the right architecture (32 - 64 bit).
