pan newsgroup reader

I have been using Thunderbird since migrating to Mint 18.3.
However i wanted to use a dedicated newsgroup reader.
I installed Pan and entered the parameters for two servers:

news.eternal-september.org
news,aioe.org

I click 'work-online' when is off but no group list turns up.
I cannot find any log files either.
Web searches turned up nothing helpful.

Is there an alternative if no solution can be found?

i've been using xpn and it's always worked for me. but can not get a connection to either of those servers you listed.
are they still active. my isp usnet server was closed down a couple years ago. seems many of them have gone off line lately.

Try nntp.aioe.org. It's working fine for me.
