Thanks for starting this thread. I'm seeing the exact same behavior. On my system, I think VirtualBox was the only update that was installed. Are you running VirtualBox too?

I'm running Mint 18.3 64-bit.

HI

Its the virtualbox update that messes things up. I do not use virtualbox so I removed the virtualbox packages using apt-get remove from the command prompt

Thanks for the info. I'll try the same to see if I can get Cinnamon to run again.

sudo apt-get remove virtualbox*
does the trick.
Thanks

Same problem and I run Virtualbox 5.1.34 on Mint as Host. Fortunately, I run a test and production system and had a second look at what it installed.

The package in this mornings update is 5.1.34-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.2.

The three package components in the update are -

virtualbox-guest-dkms
virtualbox-guest-utils
virtualbox-guest-x11

I used apt purge for each from recovery console and I'm back up.

I'm wondering if the update thinks Mint is actually running as a Guest.

Edit: My sig is/was system with problem.

As only 2 posters have bothered to mention their Linux Mint version so far, 18.3, may we assume that only Linux Mint 18.x is affected?

Just got a call from a customer running MT 18.3 Cinnamon with no VB host, and they're borked too.

OMG, this is going to be one of those days.

Mine was 18.1 mate. I have the same virtualbox update waiting for my 18.3 pc's but I blocked it as soon I had problems with the other pc.
I also have one running 17.3 and I do not have the update there so far.

You cannot login to the graphical user interface.
Yet when you see the graphical login screen you can switch to one of the 6 pseudo console monitors by pressing <ctrl><alt><f1>.
Login to the console terminal.

Execute the command sudo apt-get remove virtualbox*

Reboot and see whether login to graphical interface works again.

Can anything be done to prevent this kind of issue from happening again? Uninstalling VirtualBox also worked for me, but I would like to keep VirtualBox installed on my system.

Thanks!

It is possible to lock down a package and prevent it from updating. You can do it by opening Synaptic, mark the package in question, go to "Package" in the menu bar and choose "Lock Version".
I suppose that's one of the ironies of life, doing the wrong thing at the right moment -C.C.

Having another computer -- Sony VAIO laptop on Windows 10 - I have been able to read the issues facing many Linux Mint users since the Vitualbox update..
However, I guess there are far more with issues than those posting here. As far as my desktop - Linux 18.3 Sylvia, 64 bit with the latest Kernel as far as I recall - is concerned nothing works at all. I tried the alternative Log In as suggested, without success. I have tried the Recovery menu without any success there either. Now all I get is a blank screen with a cursor in the top right hand corner.
Fortunately I still have dual boot, with Windows 10, which is the means I am using to post this message. suspect other having this issue, without access to another pc or whatever, will not be able to read or act on any of the info here.
It would appear that the only recourse I have might be to re-install a Linux 18.1 disc which I have. However, having spent some while trying to sort out things that will have to wait. So back to W10 for a while.
Best wishes,
Linux Mint 19 Tara Cinnamon - version 3.8.9

The three package components in the update are -

virtualbox-guest-dkms
virtualbox-guest-utils
virtualbox-guest-x11
None of these packages are needed to run virtualbox on the host system. They are packages intended for Mint running as Guest (but only in the same version of VBox).

So folks who have removed the lot but need virtualbox should *fingers-crossed* be able to apt install virtualbox assuming it is just these packages that are causing the issue.

If you need to remove these packages to get into the system and want to keep virtualbox try sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-guest* rather than sudo apt-get remove virtualbox*

I wonder who you call to get these packages put in level 5.....????

If I recall correctly some or all of these packages are in the 18, 18.1 and 18.2 isos (but not 18.3) so folks with a fresh install who then update everything may-well have a problem.

My desktop is trashed also Mint 18.3 Cinnamon. I see I can run TimeShift from the repair root login and go back to yesterdays restore image. I wonder if this would work and then not install the Vbox update? don't really want to uninstall Virtualbox :(

Hello
I have the same issue with V18.3 after installing the updates for today. I do not have Virtualbox so trying to uninstall that that isn't getting me anywhere.
I am able to use the Control alt F1 command. I'm Getting Failed to connect to Syndaemon, no process found too. Hoping the is an easy answer short of reimage
If I could backup Google Chrome favorites /password prior to that, that would be a huge deal for me. Lesson learned.
