Re: After todays update-->initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart

Post by michael louwe »

IIRC, this buggy virtualbox-guest update problem should be related to the recent Meltdown & Spectre kernel patches(= kernels 4.13, 4.4 and 3.13) which had borked LM systems running the older VirtualBox 5.0 version = the fix was to use the newer VirtualBox 5.1 version.
....... Seems, this update problem only affected LM 18.x systems and not LM 17.x systems because the virtualbox-guest updates were released to first go along with the Meltdown & Spectre patches for kernel 4.13.37(= for LM 18.x), and later for kernel 4.4 and 3.13.(= for LM 17.x)

At the moment, my LM 17.3 Cinnamon 32bit/kernel 3.13 system has not received those virtualbox-guest updates or the mintupdate that removes the virtualbox-guest packages, even though my system has the related packages installed, ie virtualbox-guest-x11 5.0.4, virtualbox-guest-dkms 5.0.4 and virtualbox-guest-utils 5.0.4 are still installed on my LM 17.3 system.
....... My system does not have VirtualBox installed, which is available in Software Manager.

Hi,

i had the same problem today early in the morning after i updated yesterday evening. The purge command solved the problem with the login. But for now it seems the system is running a bit laggy at all.
Anybody noticed this too?

No problem for me ( LM 18.3 MATE with open source intel driver )
Maybe just affected user with proprietary driver installed
No. Most likely you have a fresh install of Mint 18.3. They are not affected, because - finally - the nonsense with the pre-installed VB-guest-packages had been stopped here. Only system with LM 18, 18.1 and 18.2 suffer from that mistake; also LM 18.3 systems, which had been upgraded from a previous version.
Mine is a freshly install 18.3 as a guest in a win 7 host. It can still boot but it lose track of the shared directory --- it is still there, but contents are gone. Any idea towards that?

I'm running Mint 18.3 and was affected by the virtualbox update. I uninstalled virtualbox and was able to get back in. I now have a new issue where the cinnamon process is constantly spiking and gfx and video chug because of this. My gfx card is Intel on a laptop. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Code: Select all

Solution//Workaround (page 2) of removing the guest related packages of virtualbox enabled me to enter a cinnamon graphical session once more.

Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon. OK, after doing the sudo apt-get purge of the virtualbox-guest stuff and rebooting I now get to a screen asking me to enter my password then one of journalctl -xb, systemctl reboot. I chose the reboot option, but it rebooted to the same thing. I tried startx to get Cinnamon running, but get a Cinnamon has crashed warning.

Rebooting brings up this - 0.480782 Error Parsing PCC subspaces from PCCT.

Can any one help me fix this, or is it time for a reinstall?

I have timeshift set up, how do I access it?

Cheers

Well - i have got rid of all my issues by upgrading to mint 18.3. Back on track, but I have not been using it long enough to see if it has any new issues.

Do you have a Linux Mint installation DVD or USB thumb drive? You can launch Timeshift from there to roll back to an earlier snapshot on your hard disk.

Fresh installs of Mint 18.3 are not affected by this issue and so far your problem is not related to this topic. Create a new thread about it in the virtualization section of the forum and add some more info: What exactly means shard directory is there, but content gone?

I had the same problem, so I gave the command sudo apt-get remove virtualbox* and I managed to login. But now I have no sound at all!!! What went wrong? Can someone help me?
I didn't try my sound after getting my machine back, had too much work to do. Running VLC to watch some TV a few minutes ago and my sound isn't working either. Fiddled with the Pulse Audio App but no joy and volume control icon is no longer on panel. Did you manage to get yours going again?

Removing virtualbox has not helped me. I still have the same issue with login. Any suggestions?

Same here. I couldn't even get the command line using Ctrl-Alt-F1. I did get it to remove virtualbox-guest* using the root command line in recovery mode, but it didn't make any difference, I still get the same error after entering my password.
What was that code again?

4.13.0-37-generic x86_64 (64 bit)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.7 Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
------------------------------------------------
VirtualBox Graphical User Interface
Version 5.2.8 r121009 (Qt5.6.1)
------------------------------------------------

When I first read of this issue, I froze VB updates and looked back at my Update history.
I "don't think" that I have any of the bad updates, never have any login problems at all.

The only irregularity that I am noticing is that the last two installs of a Linux program under VB:

1) Artix Linux
2) Namib Linux

won't install completely.

Artix comes up to a Live session but will not show an INSTALL option.

Namib was so messed up, it just will not completely install, it always comes up as a Live session.

Just a curiosity, and vaguely wondering how this could be related to the issues noted in this thread?

You are both in Software Rendering mode - not sure why that should be - there is someone else with the same issue - here - viewtopic.php?f=48&t=266586

You probably need to install the Guest additions from within Virtualbox - you should be able to do that from the Virtualbox 'devices' menu. See viewtopic.php?p=1449369#p1449369
