SOLVED_Nightingale won´t play mp3s

Post by krustybaguette »

SOLVED: but only to the extent that I decided to switch to Guayadeque for mp3 playing, lyrics editing, etc. However I kept a semi-working install of Nightingale because while it doesn´t play mp3s, in my Library view it has a small icon next to any mp3 that has embedded lyrics. Since my main use of lyrics editing was to include the text/lyrics of a Bible translation with the audio. I had done the project a few years ago, but discovered that somehow I had missed several chapters. I was able to clean up all my mistakes tonight using the combination of Guayadeque to embed lyrics, and Nightingale to make sure they got saved.

I am new with Guayadeque, so itś possible that there is some indicator in the My Music view but I couldn´t find it tonight.

I´ve installed nightingale both from the repository and via gdebi. The repo version 1.13 does not have lyrics editing baked in and the Mlyrics add-on ¨is incompatible with this version¨ So, I tracked down the previous version, 1.12.1 which I had been using, installed it and the lyrics editor is present but the player won´t play any of my mp3 collection.
I did try clementine and it shows the already embedded lyrics in many of my mp3ś but doesn appear to offer the ability to add lyrics with a built in lyrics editor. Here is the relevant readme information from the nightingale tarball I am trying to build.
========================================================================
Notes:
========================================================================

*To build, you need to have all of the gstreamer0.10 packages for your
distro, svn, wget, and git (if pulling the tree down) installed,
as well as the usual dependencies for building software upon your
distro. DONE

*If it gets python errors, make sure you have python2 installed,
and try the build.sh script again. NO PYTHON ERRORS

*If it doesn't play music, you'll need to copy /usr/lib/gstreamer0.10/* I can copy this folder, or its contents but have no idea what the next line means
into compiled-dist-linux-[your arch]/dist/gst-plugins and then
rerun nightingale. It should then play music.

========================================================================
Building:
========================================================================
If on Linux, simply run the build.sh script. It will download the deps
and build the app for you. You'll generally need the usual build deps
for most software packages, though. Here's the error at the end of running build.sh
Makefile:112: recipe for target '/home/kenneth/Desktop/nightingale-media-player-nightingale-hacking-9b9c8bf/compiled/config.status' failed
make: *** [/home/kenneth/Desktop/nightingale-media-player-nightingale-hacking-9b9c8bf/compiled/config.status] Error 1
I think I can handle the rest of this IF I can figure out the line in red

Ubuntu and Debian users should note you'll need:
libdbus-glib-1-dev
libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev

Also note that because of Ubuntu and Debian's incompatible taglib,
you'll want to use

ac_add_options --with-taglib-source=packaged

option to your nightingale.config

HI krustybaguette,

- I installed the Nightingale newest version 1.13a and it plays MP3 files just fine if you remove the normalization, and I cannot get the "Mlyrics" add-on to work. Others claim they have. There are better music applications than this that are being maintained.

Building and running NG on Ubuntu 16.04 · Issue #379 · nightingale-media-player/nightingale-hacking
https://github.com/nightingale-media-pl ... issues/379

- Audacious is excellent and has a lyrics option with an edit button, but the edit is redirected through your browser to edit the lyrics online which works well. - Amarok is awesome and has scrolling lyrics and a built-in editor.

* Guayadeque Music Player with lyrics and can easily edit lyrics. Another excellent music application.

Thank you for the alternative suggestions. I still hope to get Nightingale back in working order but may try others as fallback.

Wow, I didn´t find all those mp3 programs that include lyrics editing. I tried Guayadeque a long time ago. Nightingale was working so well for several years that I never had much reason to find something else. I installed Guayadeque tonight and discovered that I can not only insert lyrics but I can even format (to a limited degree) the font in which the lyrics show up. I use lyrics editing for my music collection but most important use is to insert the ¨lyrics¨ or text of an audio Bible so that I can read and listen at the same time.

On my Android devices I use Rocket Player. I had discovered an lyrics editor for Android but can remember the name. It´s a lot easier to do the cutting and pasting on a full sized physical keyboard and a 15.4" laptop screen.

Just to make sure that the mp3 files I fixed tonight worked I tried out Clementine again. It did. I think I might as well just quit trying to get Nightingale ¨fixed¨. I´ll just check it out again in a few months and see if thereś been any progress. I did partially figure out what the line I highlighted in red was about.

compiled-dist-linux-[your arch]/dist/gst-plugins
After extracting the folder ¨nightingale-media-player-nightingale-hacking-9b9c8bf¨ I discovered the there is a folder inside called ¨compiled¨ which has a lock symbol and inside that folder is a folder ¨dist¨ However that´s where the string ends. I quoted the README in the nightingale-hackking folder in the OP.
*If it doesn't play music, you'll need to copy /usr/lib/gstreamer0.10/*
into compiled-dist-linux-[your arch]/dist/gst-plugins and then
rerun nightingale. It should then play music.
There is no folder inside labeled ¨linux¨ and I couldn´t figure what is meant by [your arch]/dist/gst-plugins....So I guess that ends the search for me. I want to USE my computer to produce work, not just work on my computer to make it function. :D :D

HI krustybaguette,

"Guayadeque", "Sayonara", and "Amarok" are the easiest music apps with "built-in" Lyrics editors that I have found so far. Although, I don't see anything wrong with the editing lyrics online either like "Audacious" and some others do.

After reading your last reply, you might want to check out some of the apps in the link below.

FYI: Your Linux Mint system can read aloud various text using various options and applications. If I am not mistaken, there are Bible packages available in the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)".

I would not be surprised if there are already audio books for the Bible available to download.
