Opera 45 but can I get 47

Post by urdrwho »

Where are older Opera DEB files located. I have 17.3 Rosa installed and the newest Opera that I can get is 45. I can force install of 52 but that messes up any updates for other things because the updates want to un-install Opera 52.

The computer is an older laptop that I play on and due to resources I really don't want to go higher than 17.3. The problem with Opera 45 is that it fails to play embedded videos. Opera 52 will play them.

The kitchen computer, another older play toy, has the same problem but today I installed Vivaldi. Vivaldi seems ok but not 100% sure of it....yet.

So I am thinking that Opera 47 may do the trick, maybe?????

Hi urdrwho
1. If you are on 32-bit - Opera 45 ist the last version...
2. I found this https://forums.opera.com/topic/24994/ca ... -US&page=2 maybe it works with Mint 17.3

Obviously you have 32-bit Mint 17, so there is no option to get newer Opera. If you have 64-bit Mint 17, it goes like
https://puolanka.info/goto/opera-51-ins ... d-systems/

PS. Vivaldi works with 32-bit systems too.

I played around a bit with Mint Mate 17.3 in VirtualBox:

Download and extract the original package opera-stable_52.0.2871.64_amd64
Opera 52 has a dependency problem with libdbus-1-3 in > DEBIAN > control file.
Edit control file (in Pluma as administrator) by removing (>= 1.9.14) after libdbus-1-3. Save it.
Build a fixed package from the extracted package.
Open Terminal and type:

sudo chown root:root -R opera-stable_52.0.2871.64_amd64 (Password + Enter)

sudo dpkg -b opera-stable_52.0.2871.64_amd64 opera-stable_52.0.2871.64_amd64-fixed.deb (Enter)

Open and install the new fixed package with GDebi package installer (right mouse click - on top)

Yes this laptop is 32 bit. SO I guess I am out of luck on the Opera.
The older one in the kitchen is 64 bit and I may have an chance with that one. The kitchen is kind of my wife's but it is also the family computer to use when sitting at the counter having coffee, etc. I installed Vivaldi on the kitchen for my wife to try and if she likes it, I will remove Opera that was installed by force.

Yes 52 does have a dependency problem in mint 17.3. Hm? Sounds interesting to give a try at your terminal commands. Wonder how Opera future updates would react after altering the package?

Vivaldi runs very well on my 32-bit netbook. At the beginning a bit strange, Vivaldi has an ingenious window concept - especially on small screens.

...
It's a hack, I wrote this post with the new hacked Opera. Future updates can then be hacked according to the same scheme...

The hack is not recommended! There have been problems with Javascript - on Mint Rosa Opera is history.

For me has no problems with Mint 17 and Javascript in Opera 52.0.2871.99. Where the Javascript does not work?

Hi administrollaattori

HP Netbook Envy - without all addons nearly impossible and slow
newegg - the same...
deepL - completely impossible - addons deleted - restart Opera > nada... hasta la vista!

Version was > opera-stable_52.0.2871.64_amd64. Just write this post with Vivaldi... we stay with the North

Yeah, I noticed that, too. But if Opera thinks that they no longer support 32-bit and now Ubuntu 14.04 LTS ... Well.

I don't care about that here in the VirtualBox, but on the 32-bit netbook it has already annoyed me.
