[SOLVED] Installing GIMP 2.10.0 using Flatpak

Post by appalbarry »

Can someone tell me how to actually install GIMP is 2.10.0? I've managed to get by just fine for years with Synaptic and APTbut GIMP is determined that I use flatpak. I understand WHY someone invented Flatpak, but I can't for the life of me make it work either my Mint box or this POP_OS laptop.

GIMP only offers two options: Flatpak or install from source. I’ve never done the latter, and honestly aren’t all that interested in learning how because up til now I had better ways to install applications.

My Mint install is 18.3, entirely up to date including kernel updates, and fairly vanilla. When I go to to the GIMP download page there’s a big yellow button that says “Install GIMP flatpak.”

https://www.gimp.org/downloads/

I click that in Chrome and it downloads a file called org.gimp.GIMP.flatpakref. I click that and it opens up in a text editor.

I wasted a good hour trying to figure out how to install this thing and have failed.

What am I missing?? It's worth noting that the Flatpak web site claims that it should be included with any recent distro.

to install GIMP 2.10.0 flatpak needs Flatpak installed?

so Barry it seems from links like this https://www.maketecheasier.com/install- ... on-ubuntu/ that you have to install Flatpak first; then it helps you find packages; and it mentions GIMP there; but maybe now one just gets the latest GiMP directly from their site;

I guess Mint 18 is derived from Ubuntu 16.04 thus it came out 2 yrs ago; and may not be seen as recent;

Here's the easy way. Open the Software Manger, click on Flatpak, type gimp in the search bar, scroll down to and click on GIMP (flathub), click Install.

Hi appalbarry,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

There is an "AppImage" option for those who want to use the newest Gimp v2.10.xx, see the post below towards the bottom is more information and a direct link to a GImp AppImage which should work on both Linux Mint 18.x and 17.x systems. Check the AppImage file names for date of the most recent (newest) version.

* Direct download link to Gimp v2.10.1 AppImage file.

Hope this helps ...

There's no need for that.

From what I understand that PPA will not install/upgrade GIMP 2.10 on a current Linux Mint release. I use that PPA, and the upgrade has not appeared. PPA will work on Ubuntu 18.04 and 17.04, but not Ubuntu 16.04. I think there is due to Glib dependencies.

I think it is a matter of time before the PPA does work on Ubuntu 16.04 and Linux Mint 18.x. Until then, I will use the AppImage. (I have little use for Flatpak.)

I tried the new 2.10 version, did not like it, took it off and went back to the version in the repository.

Over on the POP_OS reddit I was given this, and it worked just dandy.

Just follow those steps: https://flatpak.org/setup/Ubuntu/
Then: flatpak install https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org. ... flatpakref

Worked flawlessly on my POP machine.

Ok, sorry about that.
