zip / p7zip question

Post by felemur »

I want to 7-zip some folders. In looking around, it looks like p7zip is already installed in 18.3 Cinnamon.

When I right-click on the file manager, is the option "Compress" I see using the p7zip or standard zip? If standard, can I make it use p7zip instead?

I think Nemo uses Archive Manager by default. I think if you install p7zip-full it will add entries to Nemo context menu?

According to Synaptic, p7zip-full is already installed, but I only see the "compress" option in Nemo.

Maybe there is something I need to do to get it to integrate in the right-click menu?

It's not an additional context menu command, but an additional option in the compress dialog. Select the command to compress and select as file type 7z. Don't miss to look also into the advanced options in this dialog. For 7z you get options, which are not available for other types (encrypting and splitting).

Thanks Cosmo.

I hate to admit it, but I never tried those options.

Once again, you fixed it for me.

Hi felemur,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

There is another wonderful archiving application called "PeaZip" which works well under Linux or MS Windows with many great options including various 7z options, archiving encryption (aes 256) with folder and filename encryption, various file checksum abilities, and secure delete options, etc... I usually use the "gtk" or portable version of PeaZip. Also, if you need or want more archiving capabilities added to whichever archiving application you use, like rar and unrar, check the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" for "archive", "7z", "zip", etc... and install those.

PeaZip Free archiver, free RAR TAR ZIP files utility

Hope this helps ...

Thanks for that, just in a nutshell, what makes it better than 7zip?

Hi felemur,

I just updated my last reply, please re-read that. PeaZip can use the 7z archive format, and more. Install it and try it (deb file) and if you don't like it remove it.

Sounds good phd21 , thanks for your help again.

When I get a chance to use it for a bit, I'll report back here and give a quick personal review.

Oh wow - that is fantastic! That is so well laid out, and easy to use. That will be my tool of choice for compressing. Thanks again phd21.

Hi felemur,

You are welcome...

I was using PeaZip in MS windows before I switched to Linux Mint years ago, and because they have a Linux version as well, I still can...
