How to activate OpenVPN?

Post by Schultz » Sat May 05, 2018 1:12 pm

I see that OpenVPN comes installed on Mint. How do I activate it? I don't see it anywhere in the start menu. Thanks.

[NOTE: When it comes to VPNs, I'm a total noob.]

Hi Schultz,

There are many good posts on this topic already in this forum, search for VPN, openvpn, etc...

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

"OpenVPN" is a secure software protocol to connect to VPN provider's servers using the "openVPN" protocols. This is usually pre-installed in all Linux Mint editions.

First, you have to decide on a VPN provider that uses "openVPN" (most do), and then simply import one or more of their VPN server locations (somewhere.ovpn) into your Network Manager or use their installation setup program (if they have one), edit the new VPN connection to add your login information (user name and password), then click the Network Manager (NM) pick a VPN server and click it or double-click it to connect to it.

There are system-wide VPN providers where everything from your Linux Mint system that accesses the Internet goes through that VPN connection once you connect to it. There are "paid for" VPN providers which is the best option like the excellent and low-cost "Private Internet Access (PIA)", "ProtonVPN", etc... which allow you to do anything Internet-related, may even speed up your Internet access, have server locations almost everywhere, etc... and there are some free VPN providers (vpnbook, vpngate, etc...) which have various restrictions, quirks, and or limitations and usually not as many available server locations.

Tip: Also change your local ISP's default DNS servers to those from a reliable DNS provider like "Cloudflare", "dns.watch", "opennic", "openDNS", etc... for security and just in case of VPN "DNS leaks". Do this regardless of using a VPN or not.

Hope this helps ...

HI Schultz,

I created a video tutorial for adding a VPN connection using the "openVPN" software including how to change your local ISP connection's DNS server IP addresses.

I am using ancient under-powered computer hardware, so please excuse any slowness or sound hiccups. This is a lengthy video, so if you want to skip some of the dialog, you can skip ahead in the video to where you see the Linux Mint desktop's Network Manager being accessed.

very hard to make Google search for 3 letter words also,
you need to use the Advanced search and provide a domain usually

https://www.google.com/search?as_q=vpn& ... as_rights=

I have found that precious few forums actually have a Search Routine that is worth a hoot.
I always go straight to Google Advanced search and enter the domain

I usually recommend Fruho to folks taking their first steps with VPN
and for people less comfortable with the terminal , it's got a GUI .

HI AZgl1500, & Everyone Else,

1.) Regarding forum search issues. I totally agree with others that this forum and other forums searching functions leave a lot to be desired. Fortunately, you can use a web search engine like Google Search to help, see post below.

Forum search issue - Linux Mint Forums
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=266948&hilit=search

2.) If there are any questions on adding a VPN provider's servers or changing your local ISP connection's DNS server IP addresses, just ask.

3.) I have never used "Fruho" but it looks interesting. I have been aware of this application.

4.) I just wanted to show how relatively simple and easy it is to add a VPN provider's servers using the typical Linux Mint desktop Network Manager from your system tray panel icon, and how to change your ISP Connection's DNS servers. But, there is a lot of information regarding these to try and convey to people, like which DNS provider or which VPN provider and why?

I was told by many people that a lot of the video tutorials go to fast or speak too quickly for some users to understand or follow well. It only takes me about a minute or two (or less) to add a typical new VPN server connection, but I am very experienced with computers and their software.

okay, gonna try this Fruho and from my perspective, it is the way to go.
Two mouse clicks and the VPN is up and working. 8)

I am setting in a hotel in Windsor, Missouri and tried Fruho...

First time, I forgot to manually retrieve "Today's password" from VPNbook,

got that done, the clicked on "Import" and it immediately hooked up to a server in Denmark and must be working because the local ISP IP is not shown,

When I click on the WiFi signals the VPN is not shown, how do we see that?
