Firefox update [solved]

Post by Bleke »

Hello. My Firefox says it's critically out of date. When I check the version in the Firefox "about" window it says 57.0, but when I check in the terminal it says 60.0.1.

Any idea why there is such a discrepancy?

Some info about my system:

I'd guess you have installed Firefox 57 manually. Try opening your menu editor and editing the Firefox menu launcher to see what its command is. Is it /usr/bin/firefox or does it point to something else?

No, I haven't installed anything manually yet. I only began using Mint two days ago.

I thought about installing manually when Firefox offered to download the latest version, but decided to try apt-get instead.

The launcher command is firefox %u

....

Now that I check the "about" window again, Firefox reports version 60.0.1. Weird. What has happened between now and my previous post is that I had a hard crash while browsing through the keyboard shortcut settings. All input froze for about ten minutes, then the screen turned black. After rebooting I have an up-to-date version of Firefox. Wow. Magic!

Thank you for your help xenopeek. I don't know how, but I'm sure it helped somehow! :)

Ah. Did you perhaps update Firefox while it was running? New version doesn't become active till you restart Firefox.

Yes. I think I did close all windows after the update, but I may be mistaken about that.

Or perhaps a background task was lingering without me noticing it. Anyway, problem solved!

as a side note, my Win7 desktop is setup to be very restricted user.
it is on 24/7.... Firefox can't update automatically, I have to do it manually "as an administrator"

No magic. Have a look at the lines right below the initial post:

Reason: Marked as [solved], because bleke confirmed that the issue has been resolved here: viewtopic.php?f=47&t=269883#p1472678

<moderator on>
Split HunteR's post into a new thread Firefox stuck on v58.0, because it is about a different problem, having a different cause and a different solution.
