Firefox update?

Post by GS84700 »

Hi Everyone,
This may be a newbie question, but I installed linuxmint on my lenovo thinkpad about 6 months ago, and am extremely happy about it. I chose linuxmint over ubuntu for ease of use (I am no computer buff). However, I've been wanting to update firefox and as it turns out, it seems that there is no easy way to do it! Can someone please help?
Many thanks
G.

You should receive updates to Firefox through Update Manager. Aren't you getting any? What is the current version of your Firefox?

Updates are available through update manager (shield icon in lower right of your screen, or find Update Manager in your menu). Current version of Firefox through that is 60.0.1.

If this didn't help, something must be wrong with your Linux Mint installation. To provide us with needed information please open the terminal program from your menu and run the following two commands. Copy their output and share it here (you can select and copy text from the terminal through its Edit menu).

inxi -Sr

apt policy firefox

This all looks to be in order and indeed shows Firefox 60.0.1 as candidate for installation.

I'd suggest: open Update Manager and click its Refresh button.

Still no Firefox update available in Update Manager? Is it perhaps showing an update to mintupdate itself or related packages like libarchive or mint-upgrade-info? You must install those first.

If that isn't the case or after installing them you still see no Firefox update I'd suggest you possibly have configured Update Manager in a way that hides this update. From its Edit menu select Update policy and set it to the middle one.

Great!
that must indeed be a newbie question. I had neglected to install mint-upgrade info : i was fooled by "info" thought it was unimportant.
Thank you for your availability, help and patience!

You're welcome :) It's indeed a somewhat common question of new users and the developers are aware it could be more clearly communicated that installation of such packages is mandatory.
