[SOLVED] Linux Mint Bug Specific to FireFox tab selection

Post by FanOfLinux »

Hi:

I have experienced this problem over the last two years or so on separate computers with LM 18.3.
Now and then, whenever I clicked on a Firefox tab, then entire tab moved to a new Window,
meaning that tab disappeared from the existing FF application, and a new FF application (as in new window) opened.
This happens more often than not.
So it is not exactly random, while it may appears to be random.

I recently have also been using FF on Ubuntu 17.x and Windows 10 on multiple computers , and they do not have this same problem.
The equivalent command for this pseudo random bug is when you hovers a mouse pointer over a FF tab, then right click and select "Move to new Window".

Hope this insight helps the LM developers.

You can move tabs from Firefox to a new window by left-clicking on the tab and holding the mouse button down while dragging the mouse cursor a little bit, then releasing the mouse button. This isn't specific to Linux Mint, it is standard Firefox behavior.

I could imagine your issue happen accidentally somewhat easily on laptops while using a touchpad?

Linux Mint 18.3 is based on Ubuntu 16.04 so if you're using Ubuntu 17.x you're likely have newer hardware support on that and perhaps, for example, the touchpad driver was optimized in newer Ubuntu releases. I sincerely doubt this has anything to do with Firefox.

Hi Xenopeek:

On laptop as well as on desktop, I used a logitech laser wireless mouse.
It is possible when I clicked the tab using left button, there is a small minute drag which triggered the new window command.
But it is happening too frequently!

Is there a means to "desensitize" this left button down mouse drag.
Or may be set a drag mouse move distance threshold before calling it a drag when left click is down?

check the mouse settings in linux mint for sensitivity settings.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

I believe this to be a Mozilla - Firefox issue.

If you search https://support.mozilla.org/, http://forums.mozillazine.org, https://bugzilla.mozilla.org this issue comes up a lot, and has been around for years.

For example: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1116084, which references https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=489729.

I'm not sure if there is a permanent solution. I've had it happen. I have to be really careful not to pull the mouse down, even a tiny bit, when I'm over the tabs.

I meant, it's not an issue caused by difference in how Firefox is packaged by Ubuntu and by Linux Mint.

Thank you all.
Looks like this is a persistent FF bug.
Why did they enable this click and drag gesture for a desktop of laptop anyway for tabs?
