can't open newer archives created with the latest version of Winrar.
Some have suggested replacing unrar with unrar-free. Unrar is based on Winrar from 2005, unrar-free...?
The only application (GUI) that can open these is Arc, but who wants to use Arc?
Xarchiver is hit or miss; most of the time it does not work on the newer archives.
What I have done: got a copy of UNRAR from the Winrar web site; it is available for Linux as a command-line utility. I copied it into my /usr/bin directory. I renamed unrar-free unrar-free.bak, and renamed the new version of unrar as unrar-free. It seems to be doing the job.
Just wondering if anyone, anywhere, is going to upgrade unrar to open the new file format. In researching this is has been about a year since the new archives started coming out, and any time anyone updates their Winrar they are using the new version to create archives.

One thing I would suggest, create a partition as a 50G partition as /. Partition the rest as /Home. IF the system fails, reinstall and use the exact same username and all your 'stuff' comes back to you.

Not close at hand. Next time I run across one I will bookmark it.

Hi Arch_Enemy,
In addition to what you have already done, you can install "PeaZip" for Linux and use with rar and unrar.
Download link to PeaZip GTK2 version

PeaZip for Linux x86-64 - Replace WinRar WinZip free

I have PeaZip, but it's clunky like Ark. It does work, however. And I have the unrar from WinRar. It's a cmd line. But like I said, I subbed it for unrar-free by renaming them and having fewer issues. It doesn't happen very often anyway.phd21 wrote: ⤴Wed May 23, 2018 9:59 pm Hi Arch_Enemy,

Apparently, my substitution of unrar (official) for unrar-free seems to have had some results.
I still occasionally run into some issues, but they aren't very common. They weren't in the first place, but now the instances are down to ~0.
