apts are upgradable [Resolved]

Post by AZgl1800 »

Just did a bit of house cleaning, and it ended up with 158 apts are "upgradable"...

Should I do this, and how to do that?
I did not include the full list, beyond the scope of the question but some of them really cause me to think they should be done, especially this one:

timeshift/xenial 18.4-0~201804010746~ubuntu16.04.1 amd64 [upgradable from: 17.11]

Code: Select all

john@john-Inspiron-N5010 ~ $ apt list --upgradable

I found this on a Ubuntu forum, is it the thing to do?

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
This is on a Dell laptop with
inxi -S
System: Host: john-Inspiron-N5010 Kernel: 4.13.0-43-generic x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.6
Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia

Hello, AZgl1500.

Launch Linux Mint Update Manager (shield icon in the bottom panel).
How many pending updates does it display?
You may have to click [refresh] in order to get the most recent list of pending software updates.
Is Timeshift among them?

Click [Install] inside Update Manager in order to install the pending updates which Update Manager dispays.

Update Manager will respect the update policy which you have chosen.
The commands sudo apt-get upgrade and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade will not do so. They will install each and every pending software update regardless.

Regards,
Karl

I have a policy that, unless I am really in a hurry, every day, after logging in, I check the updates (refreshing the Update Manager) that are available. Level 1 and 2 I agree to without even checking. Level 3 and above, I make a point to read extensively what they are about and agree or disagree, accordingly.
I have also 50-60 updates available, but they are all from TexLive which is related to my LaTeX program and that I got tired to update as it takes 1-2 hours and uses up GBs of SSD
and often only adds things that are irrelevant to all but a few people. Not to mention that the PPA asks me to update 3-4 times a month. Once a year is good enough for me. Other software I am more inclined to update it more often as it never takes hours to do that.

My faith in this rule has been challenged recently by the kernel updates though. It seems that even checking in depth like I do, is not enough guarantee of success.

Tnx karl,
I should have mentioned that Update Manager is up todate. I keep that in the Panel and when the Check Mark disappears, I look to see what it offered. ( always click Refresh )
Sometimes, I am slow to update things that have caused others problems, but right now, it seems that all is okay per Update Manager.

I was just following along with a similar thread a bit ago, and did not want to HiJack it with my thoughts.

I have Timeshift installed via the PPA, so should not Update Manager keep that updated also?

I think I now know 'the why', this is a backup laptop that has not been updated since I created the install and then mimicked my ASUS via Aptik.

Must not have looked at Update Manager since that time, it has been a long time, months probably.

Just looked at Preferences and found this:

and then changed them to this:

and when that was done, nearly all of the things I saw mentioned in the list of 158 showed up in Updates.

a good lesson..... and like MrT , I also look to see what impact things might have.

and after reviewing those 'new items' in Update Manager with my Preferred offerings, I am now satisfied and will close the thread.

Timeshift now shows up, and that puzzled me a lot while reading the thread that brought this all to mind.
