[Resolved] Can someone build a bootable GRUB utility ?

Post by tovian » Sat Jun 02, 2018 3:17 pm

I'm looking to see if someone already has - or might be able to cobble together - a bootable utility that does nothing but rebuild GRUB.

All the Linux installers I have used have a GRUB utility at the end which probes for all the OS's it can find, then generates a new GRUB.

Lately I have been installing numerous Linux distro's and I have clobbered the GRUB files on my testbed more than once (sometimes accidentally, sometimes because I don't know what I'm doing). Anyway, I have re-installed Kubuntu (on a throwaway partition) about four times - JUST TO GET THE INSTALLER TO REBUILD GRUB. I'm thinking that this is OVERKILL. Someone should have (or be able to make) a bootable utility that does nothing but the GRUB rebuild that is part of every install. I suppose there would have to be a minimal Linux kernel like is used for some of the "password reset" utilities - but that shouldn't be too difficult.

Is this possible?

THANKS IN ADVANCE !!

Probably more than what you want, but it can't hurt to have one or all of these The Super Grub2 Disk might be best... only 20mb too

Something like Super Grub2 Disk?

I see I'm late to the party again.

I suppose that's one of the ironies of life, doing the wrong thing at the right moment -C.C.

HI tovian,

In addition to the excellent "SuperGrub2" disc, there is the superb "boot-repair-disc" with a one-button boot repair option that usually works great. These and "gparted live" are must-have utilities to have on a bootable CD/DVD disc or USB stick. Note that there are 64-bit and 32-bit versions, so if you have or are working on 32-bit systems, then you will need the 32-bit versions too.

phd21 wrote:Tip: You can create a multiboot USB stick using "multibootusb", or "multisystem", etc... of all these utilities and more onto one USB stick, or one CD/DVD disc.
MultiBootUSB

Multisystem Installation - add their repository from link below, or use their deb files from the second link.

Multisystem deb files click the folder for 64-bit (amd64) or 32-bit (i386), then click into the "m" folder, scroll towards the bottom for the newest versions, click the link, save the file, double-click it to install it.

And, you can use "multicd" to create a bootable ".iso" image of these utilites and more which the resulting "iso" file can then be "burned" to DVD/CD discs and USB sticks.

Some utilities like Kaspersky Antivirus antimalware prefer the DVD disc. I created this for another Linux Mint member and for myself. But if anyone wants it, click the link below, after downloading, burn a DVD disc or USB stick with it, then boot to it.

Hope this helps ...
