I did try that command on my laptop which did nothing.
What do you mean it did nothing?
In order to avoid such misunderstandings when dealing with (relative) beginners, I usually advise to use the -v handle in such commands....
Hey, I copy & pasted that from you. :P Also lol, thanks for the translation, I totally hadn't seen what he meant. ;)

Also maybe @dave8671 a little explanation so you understand what we just discussed: The command as we had given it to you only produces an output when something goes wrong. Otherwise it just silently does its job. This is the case for many command line tools. It makes them efficient to use but confusing for new users. If you append the -v option you enable verbose output so you can see what's going on. This typically works for other commands, too.

I upgraded to Mint 19 on my laptop runs great. It had 300 updates after I installed it omg what did I miss? I do not however use the UM I use the command line to get updates for now. the only time I use UM is for kernel updates. Which seems to be working I have had no issues yet. I never new that a bug like this was detective work in finding the main cause. I do not have much hair left so I stay away from programing

This post was about Linux Mint Update manager changing owner ships of folders in the home directory not Ubuntu just to clear the air for anyone reading this.
