XCFE how do you set screen brightness? - solved

Post by AZgl1800 »

in Cinnamon, you click on the Battery Icon

in xcfe, I can't find any way to do that at all....

my eyes are extremely light sensitive since I had cataract lense implants installed.
( a blessing, I was blind before )

but, on my backup laptop, with a bare minimum of resources, XCFE is the only version it can handle.

and I need to reduce the screen brightness to 30%

does the Keyboard based keys for screen_brightness still work ?
- is that setting kept, when you reboot the machine ?.

On my other laptop, the answer is no to Kybd keys.

on this Acer Aspire, I just now noticed, by getting 2.5 power eyeglasses and a flashlight, there is an outline on the Left/right keys of the Screen brightness symbols.

and now the screen is at 20% and still very bright for me, but whew! what a relief from 100%

solved thanks.

am curious why xcfe does not keep the same thought as to the Battery Icon, that makes it so easy, no kybd shortcuts to remember.

Greetings! I've come across a (possibly) generic solution to managing a laptop's screen brightness: the "xbrightness" utility discussed @ https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... fce-ubuntu ...

So I checked my 12yo Toshiba laptop freshly minted with LM19-XFCE (32bit), and found that it wasn't installed by default. Then i installed it via synaptic, and tested it. It works like a charm for me, and overcomes my problem with my laptop's non-functioning Fn-keys :D This makes up for xfce's lack of a brightness control -- imho, the power manager's brightness reduction during idle times isn't enough.
