Could someone tell me how to do this shut off the compositor bit? I just installed Mint 18 KDE and this Firefox thing is really annoying. I installed it hoping to fix some bugs in Mint 17 but find more problems than I got rid off.

Hi funinthesun,

The KDE compositor is referred to and has a screenshot in previous replies in this post's thread.

System Settings - Display and Monitor -> Compositor - uncheck to enable compositor or use Xrender vs openGL, Apply. Switching to Xrender vs openGL works for Firefox, but other applications that use the more advanced graphics of openGL will not work or work well. I chose to not use Firefox or similar browsers like Waterfox for now as it seems they are the only applications affected by this that I use.

I have not recently checked to see if any updates fixed the mess made by the Mesa Updates. My KDE 18.3 still works well except for certain applications like Firefox toolbar buttons.

Update: I just checked and incredibly there has been no new Mint updates to fix this for KDE users. As others have mentioned, you can revert to previous mesa packages, if you want to, but then you will have to remember to not update mesa related packages.

*** Something else to consider is to just update / upgrade Linux Mint KDE 18.x to Linux Mint 19 where everything does work with the new mesa updates using various methods; the easiest method to upgrade to Linux Mint 19 KDE from Linux Mint 18.x KDE would be by simply changing a few references in 2 (or 3) files from "xenial" to "bionic" and "sylvia" to "tara", then doing a full update and upgrade. Backup first! I have not done this myself, but others have and they claim it works well. I actually installed Linux Mint 19 Xfce and then installed KDE (Kubuntu) into that which was more effort but is working well.

Want Mint 19 but still want KDE? Have 18.3 KDE installed? Read on! - Linux Mint Forums
viewtopic.php?f=56&t=272299

Edit first file, change "xenial" to "bionic" and and "sylvia" to "tara".

Code: Select all

kdesudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
official-package-repositories.list wrote: deb http://mirrors.advancedhosters.com/linuxmint/packages tara main upstream import backport
deb http://ftp.usf.edu/pub/ubuntu bionic main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ftp.usf.edu/pub/ubuntu bionic-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ftp.usf.edu/pub/ubuntu bionic-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ bionic-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ bionic partner
Edit second file, change "xenial" to "bionic"

Code: Select all

kdesudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-defaults.list
I had this line disabled with a "#" sign in front of it because I have another file "kubuntu-ppa-backports-xenial.list"
ubuntu-defaults.list wrote: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu bionic main
Edit third file if you have it... , change "xenial" to "bionic"
If you have a "kubuntu-ppa-backports-xenial.list" file, change that as well. Or create a new one for bionic ("kubuntu-ppa-backports-bionic.list") with the lines below in it and delete the "kubuntu-ppa-backports-xenial.list" one.

Code: Select all

kdesudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kubuntu-ppa-backports-xenial.list
kubuntu-ppa-backports-xenial.list wrote: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu bionic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu bionic main

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Code: Select all

sudo apt install -f

Code: Select all

sudo apt update

Code: Select all

sudo apt dist-upgrade

Code: Select all

sudo apt install mintupdate kde-config-gtk-style kde-config-gtk-style-preview

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Code: Select all

sudo apt install -f
Reboot (restart) ...

Hope this helps ...

That fixed it. Thank you very much. I hope they do eventually post fixes, but this will do for now.

I havent read through all of this. My issue (not being able to use the 'hamburger' settings button top right in Firefox) has been solved by reverting from OpenGL3.1 to OpenGL2
in System Settings > Display and Monitor > Compositor > Rendering Backend: OpenGL 2.0

(But issue after issue, I'm new to KDE!! I shouldnt play around with it too much. Driver Manager for instance crashes my session. Can't start it)

Hi ShakaZ & Everyone Esle,

I just noticed last night that over the past few days or week, something changed because these issues disappeared (are fixed) and now my Firefox and its menu and toolbar items are working again? Are these issues fixed for the rest of you?

I don't know if it was a Firefox update, a Linux Mint Update, or because I installed somethings else, etc... or a combination of these. This affected Opera browser, Yakuake, and some other applications as well.

FYI: My ancient under-powered computer only has video card capable of "openGL" v2, so changing that did not help me with these issues. I did not want to use "xrender" compositor because too many apps and KDE system components use "openGL".

I just stopped using Firefox and related browsers and the applications that were affected by that Mesa update mess. These are all working well again now?

I was seriously considering just switching to Linux Mint 19 with KDE desktop, or another KDE distro, but KDE Neon and Maui (abondonded?) were still using Ubuntu 17.x not 18.04. Kubuntu KDE 18.04 was easy and quick to install and very much like Linux Mint KDE, but my system was locking up (freezing) periodicaly for no apparent reason and there are many articles and posts I have been researching on Kubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 18.04 (Linux Mint 19 base) with this problem? OpenSUSE was very nice but very different ("yastly" different) and some applications I use were not easily available like "autokey", and yet other software was available that I have never seen in Ubuntu or Linux Mint?

No problems for me with Kubuntu 18.04 and even with Kubuntu 18.10 (running in a VM). I don't see many complaints re. freezing either. I don't know about Mint 19 with KDE.
