Where can I download 4.13.0-45 kernel?

Post by rado84 » Fri Jul 13, 2018 7:36 am

In the last hour I keep digging through Google but I can't find anywhere exactly this kernel version. I wanna download it and install it. But the closest thing I managed to find was 4.13.0-41300 or something which isn't 0-45. I want 4.13.0-45 because that kernel in particular had somehow fixed the memory leak so many people complain about and I didn't have it in Mint 18.3 with the kernel in question. And also, when I woke up the system, it didn't increase the occupied RAM.
I thought I could run 18.3 in VirtualBox, let it have all updates and then simply get the needed kernel version out of the VM but... VirtualBox refuses to install. :(

So, does anyone know where I can download exactly 4.13.0-45 kernel? I checked the local sources 18.3 used for updating but it seems they have removed some of the updates or have moved them to a location only the computer can find.

That's the last thing you want to do. To avoid issues, fall back to 4.15.0-23, 4.15.0-22 or even 4.15.0-20, and wait for 4.15.0-25 or higher to be presented in Update Manager.

That version was never released for bionic. You'd have to find and download it manually but I cannot recommend doing that.
Then how would you explain that it appeared as an update for the kernel in 18.3?
I have a full backup of the entire Linux partition which I can restore in under 2 minutes, so I'm not worried that something could go wrong.

What if I install 18.3 in VirtualBox in Windows and then just copy paste all of the kernel files from the Boot directory?

That simply won't work.

Maybe another option (taking the long way home) would be to boot up a live 18.3.
In Synaptic, update the cache (reload-button). Search for the linux-image you want. Mark the relevant packages for install. Go to "File": Generate package download script. Run the script to download the packages.

I did a quick search and found these: https://www.google.com/search?client=ub ... 8&oe=utf-8

Download to your heart's content. It hasn't been released yet so don't get your hopes up.

It was my misunderstanding. I had originally seen Mint 19 in your sig and hence my bionic comment. I noticed afterwards that you were talking about 18.3 and edited my post.

Yup. Which only indicates they don't/can't read or don't understand what I wanna do which is downgrading to an older kernel.

I think everyone is very confused. 4.13.0-45 is the current 18.3 kernel

Deb files - download and install with gdebi or dpkg -i in this order. These are for AMD64...!

https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial-upda ... 5/download
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial-upda ... c/download
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial-upda ... c/download
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial-upda ... c/download

In the interests of experimentation, I've just done this on a throwaway Mint 19 Vbox install and it boots fine into the kernel. Haven't tested further than being able to boot and log-in.

rado84 - Can you clarify whether this is intended for a 19 install or an 18.3 install?

If you can't install this kernel via update manager on 18.3 then there is something wrong with your Software Sources.

OP seems to want to install the latest 18.3 kernel on LM19. That is how I have understood it.
The thing is that the support for 4.13-series will end in a couple of months. So...

Search synapttic for 4.13.0-45 and you'll find:

Code: Select all

linux-image-4.13.0-45-generic
Linux kernel image for version 4.13.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

That's his call - I think it's fair enough to raise a health warning if someone wants to do something that the majority feel is unwise, but if there is an answer to the question it should be answered.

I suspect that this is the last kernel in this series anyway - Artful's EOL date is 19/7/18, and 4.13.0-x is the Artful series.

Wait until you're my age, junior :) , and please, don't be unkind.

Ok, the best bet for you is to download the .deb packages from the link that @smurphos gave you. You will need these:

Code: Select all

linux-headers..._all.deb
linux-headers..._amd64.deb
linux-image-..._amd64.deb
Then sudo dpkg -i linux*.deb, followed by a reboot.

Mint 19 here. When I used to run 18.3 this kernel had the best performance and fast startup of Mint. The latter is even slower than Windows.

^ that's missing the kernel modules. This is a set of kernel packages (4.15 as an example, so don't copy & paste):

Code: Select all

linux-headers-4.15.0-28/now 4.15.0-28.30 all [installed,local]
linux-headers-4.15.0-28-generic/now 4.15.0-28.30 amd64 [installed,local]
linux-image-4.15.0-28-generic/now 4.15.0-28.30 amd64 [installed,local]
linux-modules-4.15.0-28-generic/now 4.15.0-28.30 amd64 [installed,local]
linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-28-generic/now 4.15.0-28.30 amd64 [installed,local]

https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/linu ... 45-generic
That should take you to a site where you can find a download for the image-extra
