[SOLVED]Should I update to the new kernel 4.15.0-24?

Post by linuxnewbie98 »

I read some controversies between the new kernel and Mint 19 , so I was wondering whether I should upgrade or not.
The kernel I have to download is kernel 4.15.0-24.26.
Also , can someone tell me how to configure system snapshots?
It has been so much since I used Linux Mint and I don't remember of it.
I've been on Arch Linux for a few months and I decided to come back today (not a newbie anymore though lmao).

Hello, linuxnewbie98.

Considering how many users have reported the same kind of problems, after upgrading to kernel 4.15.0-24.26, and considering the fact that Ubuntu stopped rolling out K4.15.0-24.26 to Ubuntu 18.04 users more than a week ago, the answer to your question will be: No, please, do not install kernel K4.15.0-24.26.
Stick with the previous kernel, whether it is 4.15.0-22 or 4.15.0-23; and wait for a bugfixed later kernel, whatever the exact version will be, 4.15.0-28 or 4.15.0-29.

Regards,
Karl

...so I was wondering whether I should upgrade or not.
The kernel I have to download is kernel 4.15.0-24.26.
First answer is easy...NOOOO!!! Stay with 4.15.0-23 or older.
Second answer is pretty easy too
Start Timeshift, it will ask a series of questions
  1. Snapshot type (use RSYNC unless you're using BTRFS partitions)
  2. Snapshot location (must be a Linux filesystem, such as ext4 or btrfs)
  3. Snapshot schedule (this is up to you and your needs; I'd get at least a couple of dailys, a weekly, and a monthly)
  4. User home dirs (exclude them all - Timeshift is not meant for data backup)
  5. Include/exclude filters (again, to your preference. Timeshift already has a bunch of temp dirs excluded)

Yes, those are security and bug fixes that are recommended to install.

Let's hope the MInt devs fix the bugged update manager soon to no longer offer the long revoked -24 kernel.

Thank you so much for both answers. I managed to do everything correctly.
Going to mark this as solved!
