Simple scan in mint 19

Post by siawacsh » Tue Jul 24, 2018 2:03 pm

Hi, since migrating from mint 18.3 to 19 I am finding a huge streak across the page when I scan using Simple Scan. Can anyone help?

Might be dirt on your scanner. Can you try to make a copy of something (using scanner and printer)?

Hi siawacsh,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

1.) Check to see the scanner is clean, check scanner manual if necessary.

2.) For the newest scanner drivers (sane) for Linux Mint 19.x, 18.x, or 17.x

To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one: Click "Select All" above command, right click the highlighted command, select Copy (or Ctrl+Insert), click in the console terminal window, and right click paste (or Shift+Insert), repeat for each command. Restart afterward.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rolfbensch/sane-git

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt install sane sane-utils unpaper libsane1 libsane-common libsane-extras

3.) "gscan2pdf" is an excellent scanning application for Linux Mint 19.x, 18.x, or 17.x

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jeffreyratcliffe/ppa

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt install gscan2pdf
Optional:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install djvulibre-bin tesseract-ocr gocr transfig cuneiform libmagickcore-6.q16-3-extra libdate-calc-xs-perl liblog-dispatch-perl libipc-shareable-perl gsfonts-x11

Hope this helps ...

Thank you to every body here for their feedback. It is especially good to connect with you ph21. Hope all is well with you.

My apologies if I was not clear. Naturally I cleaned the scanner. But the main point is simple scan within 18.3 does a relatively OK job. No streaks at all. This streak is only happening with 19. And since I use the scanner and printer all the time, I probably might have to fall back to 18.3, if a solution cannot be found soon.

phd21, I installed sane and gscan2pdf. Unfortunately the same streak across the page persists.

Lots of problems also with printer driver for Samsung ML-1675.

Hi siawacsh

You are welcome from all of us that replied...

That's an odd situation. Can you boot into Linux Mint 18.x and it works now, but not in Linux Mint 19?

Is this a MultiFuntionPrinter (MFP) or a separate scanner and printer, and how is it connected? You can try just unplugging it and waiting about 12 secs and plug it back in and wait a little bit for it to be recognized again, and retry it.

Hope this helps ...

I am pretty certain this is a software problem. I seem to always get the strange problems no one has heard of...!

There is a propriety software called VueScan. I have the trail version. It scans flawlessly. And also the mint 18.3 live disk does a good scan pretty well.

My scanner is the cannon Lide 200 flat bed scanner. It is a dedicated scanner via USB.

HI siawacsh,

"vuescan" is an excellent application, does it work in Linux Mint 19?

Did you try unplugging the USB scanner and plugging it in again to see if LM19 and Simple Scan or gscan2pdf works better?

Hi phd21, yes I unplugged and re-plugged it. It did not make any difference for either of those two applications. Yes, VueScan works on my Mint 19 and it is good. But I was hoping for free ware. I hope I can solve the problem with simple scan or sane even.

Hi siawacsh

This suggests that the "cannon Lide 200 flat bed scanner" driver is not installed or working properly in Linux Mint 19. Did you install any Linux scanner drivers for this scanner? What was the Linux Mint 18.x driver used for this scanner, if any? What is the driver for Linux Mint 19, if any? I searched for Linux drivers for this scanner and I could not find any.

"VueScan" has its own drivers built-in and is recommend for this scanner in all Operating Systems.

I have an ancient HP officejet 4110 MFP (printer, scanner, fax) and it's scanner works perfectly in all editions of Linux Mint including Linux Mint 19 which I just tested. Simple Scan and gscan2pdf both worked perfectly.

Thanks for all that. I will have a look tomorrow. As for the quality of simple scan it has been adequate. But I found when I print scanned documents in 18.3 they are very dark. For important stuff the print quality was not great. Which is where Vue Scan came in.

I hope I can also find a solution to the Samsung ML-1675 drivers.

Hi siawacsh,

You are welcome...

Your particular scanner and printer manufacturers do not provide Linux drivers for those make and models.

Your specific make and model of scanner can sometimes be problematic, there is a fix or work around in the bugfix post, but it may require you compiling something.

Most newer computer hardware manufacturers provide Linux drivers for their scanners, printers, and multi-function "All in one" printers, etc...

You can always use Linux Mint 18.3 which was working well for you, why did you update to Linux Mint 19 which just came out?

So far, this is all I could find for your Printer...
Driver - Samsung ML-1675 Laser Printer series | HP® Customer Support
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/se ... p-194243-2

Link to download the Linux driver for your printer
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software ... .17.tar.gz

Hope this helps ...

Hello, in fact I purchased my Samsung printer after exhaustive research to make sure it came with Linux support. I have had it for almost seven years and always used the unified drivers sourced directly from Samsung. But then I exchanged this printer with my parents who gave me their HP 1018. And you might remember my endless chain of problems with HLIP. I eventually got frustrated and brought HP printer for recycling and took back my old Samsung only to find that Samsung have been taken over by HP and the drivers only available through third party sites. I downloaded my latest unified driver from

https://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/

and for some reason getting the following error even though using sudo

**** Do you agree ? [y/n] : y
./noarch/package_install.sh: 46: ./noarch/package_install.sh: ./noarch/package_install.sh: Permission denied
**** Do you want to continue to install scan driver ? [y/n] : n
**** Install finished.
siawacsh@siawacsh-sager:/media/siawacsh/4931-FDA4/downloads/samsung/uld$
But when I download from your link it worked just fine. I now have a working printer thanks to you!.

As for the scanner, you are correct. It was premature to have upgraded to 19 until all drivers are ironed out. The reason I upgraded was I made the mistake of saying yes when update manager asked if I wanted to upgrade kernel. The following day Cinemon crashed and I could not figure out how to restore it. Hence I felt it would be a good time to try out Mint 19.

HI siawacsh,

You are welcome...

I am glad you have your printer working now.

I have never had any problems with HP printers and scanners...
