Install Linux Mint 19 in a Santech C67

Post by sercamiz »

Hello,
I use Linux Mint since years and now I am trying to install Tanya on my new Santech C67 notebook. Problems arose immediately while booting from a pendrive, since at random I am asked a login and a password to go through. Hopefully sometimes it doesn't, so that I succeeded installing the system into the computer's SSD by not connecting the network, as suggested, but including proprietary software. Nevertheless, starting with the newly installed system, after entering my password, the bootstrap does not conclude and remains hanged.

Through inxi I only succeeded getting information on the cpu, that is
CPU~6 core Intel Core i7-8750H (-MT-MCP-) speed/max~3900/4100 MHz Kernel~4.15.0-20-generic x86_64 Up~15 min Mem~1397.0/15893.2MB HDD~NA(-) Procs~300 Client~Shell inxi~2.3.56
According to the factory, the computer is provided with an Intel UHD Graphics 620 and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 6,0 GR GDDR5. The audio system is a Realtek ALC, series 8 High-definition.

The log of the system in the computer while booting is the following, until it was forced to stop, after a long waiting:

Indeed, I am pretty sure that the problems depends upon the lack of the proper drivers for both audio and video cards. I downloaded the audio codecs from the site
http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downlo ... Down=false

and the video drivers from the site
https://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/136120

But now I don't know how and when to do the installation.

Note also that the shut down after the pendrive boot needs always to be forced through the power button, since the procedure enters a loop of a sequence of waiting steps: they concerning Network Manager, detect the available GPU, Raise-network, Avahi, that are not found.

Somebody can help me? I understand something of Linux, since I have it since at least ten years, but yet I am not well accustomed on such technical matters.
Thanks for help me
Sergio

The drivers you downloaded are likely worthless. Linux comes with just about all the drivers you could need, and you ordinarily don't need to go wandering around the net looking for drivers. Have you tried using the Compatibility mode, or 'nomodeset' in the boot parameters?

Thanks for answering.
When I boot the only alternative to the normal boot is Cinnamon (Software rendering), and it is the same story: nothing happens.
How can I boot otherwise?

Note that I could not load Grub, due to the known problems during the installation.

Hello, sercamiz.

Your initial post suggests that your trouble started with your live & installation system. If you install from a live system which according to your words behaves strangely at times, then the resulting installation on the internal harddisk / SSD can exhibit the strangest kinds of issues.

Please, boot your notebook from the live system, which you used for installing Mint 19 "Tara".
Open a terminal window. Maximize the terminal window.
Execute the commandline

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Mark the complete screen output which inxi displays and paste it into your next reply.
This will give us a concise overview on your hardware. This will also give a hint whether Mint 19 "Tara" recognizes all hardware correctly.

~~
On the Linx Mint 19 live system:
In case you had used the original Mint ISO image file, not the new V2, published only a few days ago, my suggestion would be:
+ download the new ISO image V2 and verify that the downloaded ISO image file is intact
+ only then create the bootable live system from it
+ boot your Santech C67 from the newly created Mint 19 live system
+ test that your system works properly
+ only if your machine works properly running the Mint 19 live system, re-install from scratch

Best regards,
Karl

Hello Karlchen,
thanks for your suggestions. I have downloaded Tara already this morning, before reading you, and I did not notice any different behaviour. In fact, on Linux Mint web site there is no mention on the version 2. I tried inxi as you suggested, but it remains blocked without answering. I have the suspect that my computer has two graphic cards (an Intel and a NVidia, as I indicated in the first communication) and this, the nVIdia in particular, may cause problems. In fact, everything turns around the graphic card, because inxi too is blocked when I try to know the graphic card (inxi -G) only.

This morning I tried to start as suggested by jimallyn with "nomodeset" when booting from the pendrive (I have no grub in the computer, due to the known problems) but the last messages before the stop where the following:
[OK] Reached target Graphical Interface
[OK] Start Stop ureadahead data collection 45s after completed startup
Starting update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes...
[OK] Started update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes.
Then nothing more.

Eventually, I tried to start from scratch with LMDE 2. As a result, the screen was limited to 800x600 and I could not install the system, because the language menu was over the screen size and the Continue button was outside the screen.
Thanks for helping me: I did not imagine that is was so difficult.
Kind regards
Sergio

I tried installing LMDE3 beta: I see the screen with 800x600 resolution, since the system runs in software rendering mode, indicating problems with the drivers. Indeed, no change is possible in the display preferences. Then, the installation crashes with the message "Errno 2. No such file or directory: /target/temp/.passwd.
Then I retried downloading the version 2 of Linux Mint Cinnamon 19. The system starts correctly and allows to connect to internet and fix the left-handed mouse.
Nevertheless if i Try to open the display preferences, it does not respond any longer. The same I installed the system including the third-party software. At the end of the installation, the system does not restart as requested and I suppose it continues the loop I found in the previous installation.

The starting of the system without the pendrive does not show the grub screen but the login starts directly. Then nothing happens.
Enclosed are the files kern.log, syslog (only the last few lines), and Xorg.0.log.

I look forward receiving some help. Thank you in advance.

Re: Install Linux Mint 19 in a Santech C67

Hello, thanks for writing.
I presently succeeded installing Debian 9.5 with Cinnamon. As it was not properly working, I installed the kernel 4.18.0 available (unstable) for Debian.
Now the situation is the following:
1) The computer starts, but Cinnamon runs in software rendering mode.
2) Due to the loss of proper drivers, the movies run with short bursts.
3) The wifi (intel killer) does not work
4) The sound functions only after connecting an output to the earphone jack. Then, if removed, it works the same, but not at the beginning without connection.
4) The logout procedure hangs as it does not find some driver to close.

Indeed, my impression is that no suitable drivers are currently available. The Santech C67 configuration is the following:

- Chipset Intel HM370 (coffee lake platform);
- video integrated Intel UHD 630 card;
- Nvidia GTX 1060 discrete video (thus double video card with MS Hybrid/NV Optimus technology);
- Realtek High definition sound (chip ALC 1306);
- Network Realtek Gigabit ALC 1220;
- WLAN Intel 9560AC;
- Webcam Chicony.

I would like to revert to Linux Mint, that seems more handy to me, but at the moment it was impossible to make it run once installed, due to the problems mentioned in the previous messages.

Thanks for helping, kind regards
Sergio Camiz
