Issue with Tor Browser Launcher --> hangs during "installation"

Post by JamesDean1969 »

Hi there,
I guess it's better to start a thread of its own.

when I install TOR as describe here from the Tor website, it seems that it doesnt get integrated correctly within the system.

Code: Select all

systemctl status tor.service
● tor.service
Loaded: not-found (Reason: No such file or directory)
   Active: inactive (dead)
Tor service should be up and running when Tor Browser is started. This is not the case in my LM Cimmanon 18.3

When I try to run the Tor-Browser Launcher, it gets stuck under "installing".
(Hint, I had to update the certificates, otherwise I got the error "invalid certificates")

Any help would be appreciated. I need the Tor service in order to download youtube videos anonymously with youtube-dl.

To install tor.

Mint 18

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/tor-browser

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install tor-browser
Mint 19

Code: Select all

sudo apt install torbrowser-launcher
Remove/purge what you already have and use one of the above methods.

Thanks for that hint.
Installation worked (funny sidenote - even though I updated the repository, after Tor installation I had to update the version from within the browser).

Still, the issue with the tor.service persists. Even with tor browser running.

Code: Select all

systemctl status tor.service
● tor.service
Loaded: not-found (Reason: No such file or directory)
   Active: inactive (dead)
How can I resolve this?

Maybe worth a try:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install tor
Once installed, run it in a terminal:

Code: Select all

tor
Next, launch the browser.

Many thanks!

Additional Feedback - the tor browser launcher under Start Menu does not work!
I have reproduced this error with 3 different Mint installations. It always gets stuck at "installing".
They should either fix it or get rid of it.
