Nemo keeps changing sorting order of downloads folder

Post by danielp96 » Sun Aug 12, 2018 12:56 pm

Is there a way to configure nemo to keep the sorting that i choose instead of always sorting the downloads folder by most recent? Even when just refreshing it changes the sort order!

I'm using Nemo 3.6.5 in Mint 18.3

Thanks

Certainly shouldn't so you probably got some files/directories inside of your home directory root-owned causing an issue with saving settings: sudo find ~ ! -user $(whoami). For some reason ~/.cache/dconf/user seems to be standard on 18 but this should otherwise not produce output. If it does, it won't after sudo chown -R $(whoami): ~/...

As suggested changed the owner of all my home directory to myself. There wasn't a change in Nemo.

Nemo 3.6.5 on 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit remembers selected sort order for a folder here, even over reboot.

In Edit -> Preferences -> Default View "By Name" is the default sort order here (but should not matter). Does the mentioned "sudo find" still anything there? Does ps ax | grep dconf show dconf-service running? Have you been rummaging through the dconf settings database manually?

Also try, with the ~/Downloads folder open, View -> Reset View to Defaults

Sort by name is the default sort order.

The mentioned "sudo find" doesn't find anything after i ran the mentioned "sudo chown"

"ps ax" shows dconf-service to be running.

I have made sure to not touch anything realated to dconf settings.

Nothing happened with "Reset View to Default" in the ~/Downloads folder. Maybe it keeps a different default for downloads?

Who knows and who cares, it should still remember any changes you make. When I try and check where things are stored, only ~/.config/dconf/user and a log in ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/ change when I set a custom sort order for the ~/Downloads folder. You may have a corrupted dconf database I suppose.

Easiest way to check is creating a new user and seeing if things work for that user. Well, that or sudo rm ~/.config/dconf/user and logout and -in but be prepared to have several settings reverted to factory then...

Tried with new user, when opening the downloads folder it's sorted by modification date.
After changing it to "by name" it keeps the preference when refreshing and when restoring default view.
If I change folder or close and open nemo it's again "by modification date".

Are you changing the sort order by clicking on the "name" column header? If yes, same here.

Not same here. If I change folder and later go back into ~/Downloads it's still set to Name sort order and this includes over a reboot.

Am now a little worried due to the "by name" rather than "name" specification that you are not changing the order simply by clicking on the column headers. If you are, I have no additional suggestions available: "works here".

I'm changin it by clicking in the column headers. Sorry if my explanation wasn't correct.

Only thing that comes to mind otherwise is unlikely but was in fact observed in a thread I was in many moons ago. Back then poster had compiled and installed some gnome software from source, including an incompatible library that threw dconf off.

Assuming that doesn't ring a bell though, I'm fresh out of ideas. Anyone who isn't: please join.

From inmediate memory, I haven't compiled any library or gnome-related thing, but will check more deeply.
Will also check from a live USB when I have time.

Thanks for trying. :)

It appears that current view settings for folders under home are in fact stored in ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/home{,-12345678.log}. Do you even have a ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata directory? If no, you'd create it, if yes rm ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/home* (and a logout/in or reboot) may be called for. Note that the result would of course be/include resetting all folders' view settings.

[EDIT] Noticing that directory being an issue was of course already denied by same behaviour on the new user account. Other than above self-compile suggestion, I officially give up...

After doing rm ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/home* its keeping working! It's keeps the name sorting!
It only changes with restore default view, but when selecting name it keeps the selection.

Thank you so much for helping. :) :) :)

How very odd then that the new user account showed the buggy behaviour as well. But, oh well, good to know that it's working :?
