Imagescan for Linux - jpeg problem

Hello,
I use Image Scan for Linux 2.30.1 to scan images with an Epson perfection V550 photo scanner.
In this software I have a drop down menu where I can choose the document format (png, tiff, pdf, etc...).
The strange thing is that jpeg is in gray. I can select every format except jpeg. What can be the cause of this?
How can I directly scan to jpeg?

You could install the latest version of Image Scan for Linux:

I am using Image Scan version 2.30.3 and JPEG is an active option.

No, I tried that, but it didn't work.

I think this jpeg problem is something in general. I tried to open some jpeg images that came from a Mac and the image viewer don't shows it.
Instead I have the following message:
'Failed to open input stream for file'

This is only for jpg.
Png works fine.
I don't know how to solve this. Every help is welcome.

FYI: It is also super easy to convert images from one format to another using various applications like "converseen" from the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)", for example from "png" to "jpg".

It sounds like something hosed your system.
Try this:

sudo apt-get install libjpeg-turbo8 libjpeg8 libopenjpeg5

If it says you already have them, try this:

sudo apt-get install libjpeg-turbo8 libjpeg8 libopenjpeg5 --reinstall

@phd21: thank you, but jpg is important if I want to see image files on my tv with usb stick.

@Flamur: what do you mean wit “Something hosted my system’ ?
My system works with Dual boot. I have a second drive with Windows 10.

- "gscan2pdf" can scan into jpg / jpeg images

- FYI: it is also very easy to convert images from one image format like "png" into "jpg" one at a time or many at once using "converseen" in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM).

- I think that "Flemur" may also be correct that maybe something is wrong or missing with your system because you should be able to process "jpg" images with most image related applications by default.

I tried Simple-scan and there jpg works.
The converseen software works great too.
Is it normal that the file size of jpg is much smaller than png?

Yes, jpg images seem smaller than png images usually, and JPG compression is usually adjustable.
