your reply was on another page i didn't see posted, so i tried to find out how to see what my current kernal is on my own

just put in that command and kernal only says "4.15.0-34-generic x86_64"
bits: 64 gcc: 7.3.0
desktop: connamon 3.8.9
Distro: Linux Mint 19 Tara
etc etc

the linux community's reputation is well deserved i've found out

that's 2 unfriendly responses now so whatever, on top of all the sh*t from other forums and the unhelpful idiots on /g/ . gonna try out a different distro or just go back to windows.

Look, we're trying to help you here. We can't do that without any information. You were making progress by stating the actual symptoms you were experiencing instead of what you thought would be the solution... I was hoping we'd be getting somewhere.

If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

its the "etc etc" that you didnt put in thats important...if you go to a doctor for a problem, do you hide information from him that can help him with a proper diagnosis?...is that doctor being "unfriendly" because he says he cant help you because you will not tell him the truth?...its the same thing with trying to help you online...no one is being unfriendly, you are just making it needlessly difficult to be of any real help to you...DAMIEN

Is the stuttering in Youtube only occurring in Firefox? Have you tried other browsers?

Also, if you are going to try a different distro, do not try Ubuntu, as you will more than likely have the exact same issue, as Mint is based of Ubuntu. But IMHO Mint is the best distro for people new to Linux, so I doubt you will fare better with a different distro.

In my experience I have always found the community nothing but helpful. You just have to help them to help yourself. As others pointed out, it is always best to start out describing symptoms, so people can help solve your symptoms.

In FF, only thing I have changed to try and fix it was to change values:

layers.acceleration.disabled true
layers.acceleration.force-enabled true

Try Chrome or Opera, if you search for them they offer .deb install files, same as .exe's on windows, just double click on the file but you need to input your password. Always chose the 64bit (x64) versions.

if the stuttering does not occur in Chrome or Opera then it narrows down what the issue could be, as if it is fine in Chrome/Opera then it is unlikely to be a driver issue, as far as I know.

Another thing, I cannot remember if this comes preinstalled with Mint or not, and most youtube videos are HTML5 based these days anyway, but install/update flash by typing this into the console...

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

I suppose that it would be better to install mint-meta-codecs, which includes multimedia codecs.
