Quick Question on Google Earth

Post by ytene » Wed Oct 17, 2018 2:05 pm

Running Mint 19.0 Tara / 64-Bit

Up and running on the Cinnamon desktop, I noticed that my "Update Manager" shield, showing in the "System Tray" area of the menu bar, has a red cross on it...

A check of the utility itself shows a simple error message:-

"The repository 'http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb stable Release' no longer has a Release file."

Attempting to go to the URL in a browser shows a forced redirect to an https version of the URL, but then throws a 404. The meaning is pretty clear; something has happened on Google's side which may have broken the Google Earth package. I'm just curious to know if this issue is transitory or permanent or quite what is going on. Does anyone have any more information please?

Thank you.

I downloaded Google Earth from https://earth.google.com/download-earth.html and installed it, to see what repository configuration it adds. Note that it only support 64-bit systems.

It created the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth-pro.list with this line in it:

Code: Select all

deb http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb/ stable main
Running apt update to see if there were any errors with it I found it is not probably configured to be 64-bit only:
N: Skipping acquire of configured file 'main/binary-i386/Packages' as repository 'http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb stable InRelease' doesn't support architecture 'i386'
You can work around this by editing the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth-pro.list file and adding the option [arch=amd64] to configure it properly as 64-bit only, as such:

Code: Select all

deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb/ stable main

Entirely correct, just to add that it may be easier for OP to do this via Mint menu > Software Sources > Additional Repositories > click on the Google Earth repo > Edit URL.
