[solved] Opera browser installed, worked fine yesterday, now it won't launch

Post by AZgl1800 »

and that pretty much says it all.

Installed Opera yesterday just to have an optional backup browser available.
Used it for a few hours to get the feel for it, and to customize the way it works.
It has a few Bad Features, but was able to fix them with corrective Addons.

Today, it won't launch. The laptop has not been powered off in a few days, but can't see how that would make any difference.

Addons added
  • Home Button
Open in New Tab made Active Foreground the way it is supposed to be
    Set Home location
Customized the Smart Dial list to my preferences
    Installed LastPass
that is all I can remember, nothing special, just a few tweaks.

Try starting it from the terminal to see if any errors are shown there. Don't know the binary name but you can probably just type opera and press tab key to see if it can auto complete it to something longer (like opera-stable).

was going to do that yesterday, and got interrupted.....
this is interesting, it hangs in Terminal
I finally had to use the Alt-F4 to kill Terminal and it gave the error about being busy...

IDK, could be something in the profile? I'd personally try to create a new user account through Users and Groups in your menu, login to that and then try starting Opera there. If it works there, it's something in the Opera profile on your own account. If it also doesn't work on your own account it must be something else.

You can reset your Opera profile (deletes everything; extensions, bookmarks, saved passwords) by deleting the directories ~/.cache/opera and ~/.config/opera.
rm -vrf ~/{.cache,.config}/opera

new user brought up Opera, but Terminal gave this message before it came up.

Code: Select all

test@john-TP500LA ~ $ opera
Gkr-Message: secret service operation failed: The name org.freedesktop.secrets was not provided by any .service files
[1:1:1022/132605.507691:ERROR:webthread_impl_for_utility_thread.cc(19)] Not implemented reached in virtual blink::ThreadScheduler *blink::scheduler::WebThreadImplForUtilityThread::Scheduler() const
Gkr-Message: secret service operation failed: The name org.freedesktop.secrets was not provided by any .service files
test@john-TP500LA ~ $
I suspose that is because no profiles had been set up for the user 'test'

interesting..... Opera came up that one time, then I closed it out, and it refuses to come up again.

and again, it hangs in Terminal.

this is very strange.

switched over to 'test' user, and it won't come up there in Terminal either.

it has to be corrupted badly, I am just going to purge all of it, and do a reinstall.

Looks like you installed Opera 12.16.1860, which is the unsupported pre-chromium version from 2013. Suggest you remove that again and install the current version of Opera instead, which is opera-stable.

If that is the case, good catch! Remove your current Opera package and install Opera stable from https://www.opera.com/. You'll download a .deb file that you can then install and it will add a repository to your system for updating it through Update Manager.

Well, looks like Opera's backdoor for some 3 letter agency failed?

I give up, it is a trash app as of today...

purged Opera
deleted all of my downloaded files, downloaded the new stable app direct from Opera's website,
and it still will not launch.

going to delete it and forget that it ever existed.

Perhaps try Vivaldi https://vivaldi.com/download/. Another Chromium based browser.

installed that and it came right up,
will work with it and see how I like the way it works.

Firefox is my #1 basis for how a browser "should work"

all others have to meet that regimen, including the way they handle Bookmarks.

closing thread, thanks.
