"Open with" does not differenciate between different text file formats

Post by buscon » Tue Nov 13, 2018 6:17 am

hi all,

I am on Mint 19.2 with mate.

To simplify the explanation of the issue, let's say I have two text files:
1. foo.txt
2. foo.m3u
The first is a simple text file, the second is a text file containing information of a playlist (that I usually play with VLC).

When i associate the file foo.txt to be opened by a text file editor, it works, but then all *.m3u files will be also opened with that text editor.
the contrary is true too, when I associate the file foo.m3u to be opened by VLC, all .txt files will be also opened by VLC.

Why is this happening? How can I make marco (or caja) differenciate between different text file formats?

thanks

There is no Mint 19.2.

Run this in a terminal window to restore association with VLC:

Code: Select all

xdg-mime default vlc.desktop audio/x-mpegurl audio/mpegurl video/vnd.mpegurl
Should work unless something is wrong with your file type detection.

you may be better off, to open the Text-editor first,
and then open that foo.m3u file - rather than using the file to start the Text-editor program.

that way, you shouldn't change the File Association type.

You can also right-click > Open With to open with the non-default association without changing the default.
